All this 6 ARC talk has my rifle and some ammo in truck heading to rifle range today.
Did you go this route? I can't quite figure out what exactly is done when bushing a bolt vs opening a .223 face and if there's any advantage to one over the otherI think it is around 130 when I had talked to him. Karl is pretty good about responding to emails, if you send him what you want done he can give you an estimate on cost
I did not. I picked up a Tikka 223 barrel that I am turning into a 22 creed instead. If I find a deal on another used left hand Tikka I probably will.Did you go this route? The wider release of 6GT ammunition by Hornady makes the ARC less appealing in a bolt action.
Correct. In the real world they do the same thing downrange - no real advantage to GT except a bit longer effective range but that depends on barrel length etc, you can make a 22" ARC outperform an 18" GT.Correct me if I’m wrong, but GT splits creed and ARC pretty close on capacity and performance as well? 100fps or so over ARC with heavy for caliber bullets.
I considered ARC but went GT because of the ease of using an existing action/bolt with no work, 5 round mags that actually exist, feeding concerns with the ARC (given how much trouble 6BR seems to give).
I'd say recoil is splitting hairs, the 6ARC might have a fraction less but I can still spot my shots shooting positionally with an 8LB all up 6GT.
Will be interesting to see what barrel life ends up being. Have seen people quote figures for PRS use of 3-5000 for ARC and 2-4000 for GT but it's pretty variable
If the ARC was better supported in bolt action parts it would be great but as it stands right now I wouldn't build one with the stuff available
2-4k for the GT but the top guys are pulling their dasher barrels @ 1500 rounds?
I pull my 6gt barrels at 2500 rds, they're still printing 10 shot sub moa groups tho. My friends shooting dasher swaps theirs at same Rd count.2-4k for the GT but the top guys are pulling their dasher barrels @ 1500 rounds?
I’d get ammo actually available?
I looked a month or so ago and couldn’t find any in stock
A Tikka in 6 ARC probably is the one gun solution.
The 308 is a great cartridge all around- way better than most now think. It’s one of the few options for a cartridge that has enough barrel life to be used as a trainer as well. It can be a one gun choice, but recoil is higher than one really wants for full time use.
The 6.5cm is what people thought the 308 was. But, barrel life is enough lower to be a problem for a true one gun solution, and it still recoils a bit more than optimum.
The 6cm is great, but its barrel life is short enough that it is not really usable as a trainer, and it is more a replacement for a “magnum” for most hunters.
The 223 is the trainer cartridge, everyone should have one, and it is good for hunting to around 450’ish (yes, it can kill well at much longer ranges). However, there are a couple of states that don’t allow it- this only actually matters if you currently hunt in those states- buy guns for what you actually hunt, not what you may hunt.
Enter 6 ARC: near 223 and 308 barrel life- true practice gun capable. Well below 6cm recoil, 600-700 yard terminal range, $20 a box good factory ammo. Easy modification to bolt to work in a Tikka.
Your posts always makes a few of those guys on the 6ARC FB page get all up in their feels.Dropped this doe at 501 yards with my Howa 6 ARC. 108 ELDM handloads over Varget 2675 FPS.
I shoot this rifle every week. I’m fully confident in its capabilities.
