You're the man!
I'm doing pretty much the same thing(minus the loan), all 4 in four years. It's not getting any cheaper and i'm not getting any younger.

I'd be saving in case one isn't successful, as someone who's going round two for a stone in a few months. Worse case you'll get to hunt them again. I sure don't want to stop and I'm already trying to figure out another sheep hunt in 2027

I love it. Do what you can, why you can. I watched my dad struggle physically on our moose hunt last year. It really opened my eyes to chasing my hunting goals. Good luck on your hunts!!

Do the hunts and don't look back. You come into this world naked and broke and you go out the same way. The cemetery is full of people who would trade it all for one more day.

Original post was judgmental of the OP. To say otherwise is disingenuous.

Doesn’t matter what the terms are on your mortgage. If you utilized any money for boats or snowmachines (unless they are used to make money) then you are being hypocritical as long as you have a mortgage balance.

OP just did it better. He paid off his house FIRST. You used money that could have paid off your house on toys. Now that he wants to access equity everyone goes crazy.
Result is the same except OP will be paying a higher interest rate...like 6-7%

Well, I did it. I have booked all 4 sheep hunts:

Dall in NWT $36,000 2024
Stone in BC $85,000 2025
Desert in Mexico $55,000 2026
Cali bighorn in BC $120,000 2028

All outfitters have confirmed in writing there will be no changes to these costs....I am locked in per our contracts.

I am certain that by doing these hunts over the next 4 years, and paying back my loan back shortly thereafter, the math will speak for itself, and that I will be patting myself on the back in 15 years when people are still whining about how expensive sheep hunts have gotten. No telling what they will cost then. Reading everyone's 2 cents has been entertaining, regardless of if they were supportive, critical, or downright rude. The world is full of opinions and personalities, and the internet makes them much bolder than they would ever be in person. I hope you all have the courage to follow your dreams, whatever they may be, and in a way that helps you sleep best at night.

Cheers,

Curious why you chose the Cali Bighorn vs a Rocky hunt in Alberta or BC? That price is steeper than any sheep mountain.

I hope you a-holes haven't scared the OP from updating us on how the hunts turn out.

I'm not a financial wizard. I get the impression OP has done okay for himself, and didn't arrive at a place to even be considering this by being a total dumbass. Ultimately, his decision doesn't affect me or the national debt, so I hope he enjoys hell out of himself.

I'll say this, you were pretty much dead nuts on that 300K estimate in the OP. I thought for sure the stone would be the most expensive but the bighorn blew it out of the water.

Holy crap! That is amazing! Excited to follow along on your slam over the next few years.

Just of curiosity, why choose the Cali bighorn for your rocky? If the goal is to simply get the slam, Alberta seems to have plenty of rocky bighorn hunts for about half that price.

I am pretty sure it has to do with success rates. I did a lot of research on this once Wyoming changed their sheep tag numbers for NR. Alberta ranges from 50 to 80% success. There are 2 outfitters in BC that are 100%, but maybe take 1 hunter a year.

This is an interesting thread and very eye opening to see all the different angles. I applaud the OP for taking a ‘chance’ at his dreams but also question the long term play. That being said, I was going to take a similar (but not identical path) a few years back to book a moose hunt. Things happened, set me back personally and financially, but moving forward and I will “bet the farm” to book a guided moose hunt very soon. It has been a dream of mine for over 20 years. I know my limits, my friends limits, and DIY is out…so, for me, whatever it takes to book I will. If that means a second job for a year or home equity or just flat out move and cash in, doesn’t matter. I will figure out how to make more money, what I can’t do is figure out how to make more experiences. (Yes, I know they are one in the same)
