What would be the best way to go about getting into Sheep hunting in 2025, assuming you were starting out fresh today?

forget about wasting money on sheep raffles...unless you are good at attracting lightning. next time bitcoin has a winter...and it will have another, drop 50 grand into it and within a year or less you will have 100 grand. cash out and wait another year or so for the next winter, put that 100K into it and wait until it goes up again for another double. now you got 200K in less than 5 years, cash it out and pay your taxes and you went from 50K to 140-150K after taxes. Now your next 2 sheep hunts are paid for in cash and you didn't have to sweat or drain your bank account.

Me? I'm waiting for the next long, hard recession to hit when those hunt fee's will get cut in half, like back in 2000/2001 and 2008/2009. Outfitters will be begging again.

Book the NWT Dall hunt now for 28’ or later and go hunting. It’s the only guarantee you get to go hunting and additionally, probably the best route available at being successful on said hunt.

Those are old/current prices. I talked to Harold of Gana at the sheep show LAST year and he was booked to 2028 and would not give me a price other than it would be SIGNIFICANTLY higher than the 43k listed.
I also talked to Harold at the Western Hunt Expo, after the sheep show. Then, he had a week #4 backpack hunt opening in 28’ and a horseback opening the first week in 28’ & 29’. If you wanted wide open dates then he was booked out til 30’. Prices were around an extra $4-5k on top of what was currently listed for 26’ if I recall but don’t quote me on that.

I say go the poor man way and keep applying in those states that offer a total random draw, and pray and hope

Alaska dall sheep hunt (Brooks Range) in 43 days, 17 hours, and 36 minutes…getting extremely close - 2nd attempt for a white sheep as we bumped a legal ram back in 2020. I vowed to return and hunt dall sheep again. The training and planning continues!

Luckily, in the interim, I drew a nonresident Arizona desert bighorn sheep tag in 2022 (13 points) in the Kofa’s and was permanently kicked out of the “<1 Club.” I am forever blessed, grateful, and thankful for that experience.

Good luck with your research and choices. You never know when you will hit. No guarantees on the mountain and never easy. Just go. You won’t regret it.

Happy hunting to all, TheGrayRider a/k/a Tom.

I suppose this could happen but it seems pretty unlikely if Alaska does indeed implement the State land concession program they just passed. Guided Dall sheep hunting opportunities will get cut back significantly and prices will likely take another significant leap as supply drops. Just what I suspect would/will happen...

concessions in canada that are operating with sheep tags are now multi-millions operations and i doubt as well like you they will sell for way less ... the older ones got those outfitters for almost nothing but new operators/outfitters are not on the same level and as trophy hunters are willing to pay the price they will continue to charge up ...

Kinda ironic that a Canadian is looking for DIY sheep opportunities in the US. Didn’t realize you are in the same position as us when it comes to sheep hunting the western provinces.

Go broke. Make your dream come true and forget about the mortgage and everything else. You only live once and don’t want to regret not going on that hunt. 😉

This is essentially the only way… but being from Alberta, we have no sheep left so you should move to BC or the Yukon or NWT

i will never move to nwt. the sheep are very hard to reach thus almost no resident pressure and moose are very limited as well ..

Yeah after reading all the forum posts here Alberta is off the table, unfortunately.

No resident pressure sounds, ideal from an outfitted out perspective. I'm guessing that is not the case in the Yukon? they are more accessible to locals?

it is ideal for the outfitters for sure not having a lot of pressure. if you look on a map it is very hard to reach nwt hunting grounds of the mckenzie mountains. for main interests as well the big difference is the use of helicopter we do not have in the yukon. trying to find the harvest differential between residents and non residents in nwt and yukon.

some areas here are more accessible for sure for us locals without flying and if you are using your feet you can get a lot of access but recently our springs and winters affected a lot the lambing and survival rate is really low.

we are not very good on predator control as well.

Covid 2020 would have been great for Canadians- no USA or other non citizen hunters could make it there!

Recessions are tricky, need to have money when everyone else is losing it.

Everyone has choices to make. Where you live is a Choice. How much money you earn is a choice. How you spend it is as well

covid forced us to not travel outside our territory or provinces it was no better but hunt was better not that muh people hunting and none from abroad ...

It’s the most difficult hunt in North America. It is not for a rookie. It is for the most dedicated and experienced mountain hunter who has an incredible desire to take a ram. It is not for 99.9999% of hunters.
I went for Dall twice in the Yukon Territory. My advice to the OP is get into the best shape of your life and when you get there, get into better shape. Cardio isn’t nearly as important as lower body strength. You’ll take a beating.
