New Athlon Chronograph

I would take this to mean that an update will likely come out, and the problem fixed.

S&S review shows the Athlon totally sucks. All you guys who placed an order before April should cancel it ;)

Update for all who are pondering an order - eurooptic’s quote was $318+tax/shipping as of today. However they estimated a 60 day lead time for orders placed today and moving forward

Yeah that’s what I was quoted. I ordered from S&S with the Rokslide code

For the guys saying you’re ok with 20 fps discrepancy as long as it’s consistent- when you’re off 5” at 1000, what do you change on your solution input? How do you know if it’s BC, velocity, DA, aerodynamic jump, an up/down draft you’re not recognizing, mirage impacting your POA, etc? Because I don’t trust myself to accurately diagnose such a thing and I’ll feel a hell of a lot better knowing I have the best inputs in my solution. Because the conditions the next place I shoot 1000 are very likely to be different and thus my data likely will be as well.

If I’m just going to go off dope from what the target tells me, part of my intended purpose for having a chrono is out the window.

How do you know yours (labradar, garmin, magneto, etc) is right?

Edit:
It’s all a guess. How do you know the BC from the manufacturer is right? You get in the ballpark, you shoot at distance, and you change some ~unconfirmed~ input to make your chart match real life. No input trumps reality. If I’m 5” off, change velo to correct, and my chart now accurately reflects real life at 600/750/100/1250 that is my velo. Or change BC to achieve the same. I don’t care if it’s velo or BC, because either way I hit my target downrange, and I know I drop below 1800fps between 700 and 750 (using either velocity number with constant BC or either BC number with constant velocity for my 6.5 PRC example).

Maybe it's just me and using chronographs for over 3 decades but I've always used the info as anecdotal for drop tables. Don't really care if it matches up perfect because it never does and likely never will. Before I ever could afford a chronograph I just guessed and fudged my way into it like many did or still do. Worked fine then and still does :)

Yes. I want something to get me in the ballpark as closely as possible, but I'm still going to be adjusting something, primarily velocity or BC depending on bullet and mfg. I try to only true in the best conditions to minimize those variables.

I'll likely never shoot passed 600ish on game and I don't compete, so drops passed that are purely for fun.

My goals with the Athlon are consistency, convenience, and decent price point. All of which look to beat my Caldwell and the Garmin from what I've seen so far.

The other 2 reviews I see in YouTube are promising for the functionality of the Athlon. Theirs seemed to do better than the unit S&S used. In another review, where they used 10 garmins at once, 1 unit had some wildly off numbers. So I think it's reasonable to think that the Athlon is just as good and both brands are capable of putting some units out that have issues.

Rokslide25 is 10%. S&S doesn’t charge sales tax, and it’s free shipping. So $360 out the door
This is where I bought mine, mostly due to S&S loyalty. Those guys are great.

Hell, Another, simpler point than my original reply.

Say your chrono is 100% perfect. The Athlon is consistently 20fps high. Nah, 1000fps high. Consistently. Shoot and deduct 1000fps and BAM, 100% accurate number like your chrono. They key is consistent - which it was in that small sample

I have little doubt that a few firmware updates will remedy the situation - the video by long gunner on YouTube showed the update firmware tab on the athlon ballistics app which links via Bluetooth. Believe they mentioned in the video by S&S archery that the Garmin unit has well over 600 firmware updates at this point, where the athlon has 60 or something like that and all in pre-production. Did it appear perfect, no, can it be improved/updated, most certainly, was it consistent, seemingly so.

it really seems like these companies sit on their new technology until someone forces their hand to produce something to stay competitive. With that being said though, I am happy to see different options come to the market as that will hopefully drive prices down!
