New Athlon Chronograph

Agreed. I asked why he mentioned it as I emailed them the same day I got it and it never worked but he ignored the question in his response.

When I opened the box I did notice the unit wasn’t set all the way down in the recessed slot. Maybe this caused it to get banged around in transport??

Hoping they aren’t that fragile… someone needs to drop test theirs now while it’s in the 1 year warranty period and let us know about the durability.
Mine was also dislodged in the packaging. I thought for a second maybe it was a demo and not a new unit but I think it just shook itself loose probably.

FWIW, in at least one of the posted reviews, the reviewer mentioned that it seemed that the Athlon appeared to be more sturdy than his Garmin. Was always afraid he would break the Garmin. Of course, that’s just one person’s opinion.

Good idea.

When you get your new one, try knocking it off the bench 4-5 times.
That seems like it would be a very realistic test.

Can’t be me, it would be too suspicious since I’m the lucky one who got to warranty a brand new one. 😂

Well….some of the brakes I’ve seen at the range will do it for you.
I’ve seen that, the Garmin had only had a small scuff after falling 3 feet onto concrete.
Also velocity readings were weird one time until someone noticed the garmin was being rocked by the blast with each shot

Lower velocity than expected in this reload, but I had never tested it before neither through a chronograph.

Great accuracy out of my Ruger No. 1 45-70:

Confirmed velocity on loads in my 5.56 and got results matching past readings with 55gr ammo around 3050 fps and my 64gr duty loads at 2950.

Got mine from euro 2 days ago. Will be testing soon…

It’s a small win, but for those who didn’t preorder (like myself), it looks like S&S has moved up their estimated next ship date from early June to late May!

Count me a dissatisfied customer… I took it to the range and had it next to 2 other garmins, swapping sides, moving around positions - the Athlon consistently read high by 10-15fps average. The garmins were showing right around the dope that I have verified for my rifle (we shot out to 900). It also read 10fps fast on my bow for the cold bow challenge. I didn’t have anything to check it against, but I know my bow isn’t pushing 296fps+. Last I checked it was mid 280s.

Feel free to mail it to me!

Pre-ordered an athlon rangecraft through euro at a special pricing $263. Should be here tomorrow and will hit the range to test out new load using ramshot grand powder.
Euro's price is now $399.
Cameraland has them for $349.

10 fps on a bow is pretty significant, that would throw off a sight tape for sure

Initial YouTube reviews are not great. Anyone else have higher numbers with these units versus their verified speeds?
still got time to cancel my order, and feel like I should.

How much higher? Mine are somewhat, but not so significantly so. I’m not developing loads though, just shooting factory loads and interested more in SDs and ESs.
I’d be curious to know how others are verifying speeds to use as a “ standard “.

My Athlon seems to be pretty consistent with the numbers I had with my Caldwell.
Who is to say the Garmin numbers are not a little off? Either way, with all that I've read and seen on the videos. There is not a whole lot of difference in the numbers between the two.
Ten fps difference when you are talking 2000 fps to 3000 fps is not a big deal.
