I have been an officer for over 20 years and will retire in a few months. I have seen such a change in my short time. I feel we have changed to a society that wants firemen cops. By this I mean they want you to come solve what where their problem is the go back to the pd and wait for the next call. People what a security not policeing.

Seems to me that no one can be held accountable for their own actions and outcome in life and they get pissed when someone points out that they did wrong.

Well most agencies will have bench marks, standards, or what they really are quotas. If you are just siting by the radio waiting for a call you will get one and it is from you boss saying get off you ass and do something. What is that? Go get into to some sh&@.

Well if you are good at getting into sh&@ you will break an egg or two.
Policing is a dirty business and it can be ugly. Sometimes you have to punch a person in the face, why are we surprised when the outcome is ugly.

I have never go to work wanting to hurt a person but I am prepared to kill a person everyday I go to work.

I want to help everyone I work for. I have gone so far out of my way to help my citizens and will always do that but I am in an ugly business and am prepared to deal wit that. What I hate is I know my community, agency, and government will not back me when I have to be ugly its on me.

my district attorney just came out saying he will not accept the support of any police officer or union. I take that as he will not support us either.

Training & pay to reflect reality of job & would cut half the cops I have seen.
LEO's have been carrying everyones water for them with little to no support.

I hadn't thought about that until someone mentioned to me last week that its probably going to be a long time before the officers charged will be brought to trial because the prosecutors are going to need to build a really bulletproof case because the union is going to have the best lawyers money can buy and will be defending the officers at all expense... and I immediately thought "huh, kinda ironic..."

Understaffed maybe but the budgets are crazy, crazy high in major cities. The property taxes in my neighborhood for a single family home START above 30k a year. There are times that there are no cops available to answer 911 calls. The budget for Chicago PD for 2020 is 1.8 Billion (with a B) give or take. There are 13,500 employees. Do the math and just imagine what sort of inefficient bullshit is going on with all that money. The budget for Chicago Public schools is 125 million (with an M), by the way, maybe if all these kids were getting awesome educations and there were great after school extracurricular activities after school there wouldn’t be a need for a 1.8 BILLION dollar budget for cops. Defund the Police sounds a lot more radical than it is.

I’m not going to check on other big cities but I bet that ratio of spending is common. We also shuttered most of the mental health facilities due to budget cuts...
