What Do You Utahns Think Of Senator MIKE LEE And His PUBLIC Land Sale Bill?

I know they hunt. I’ve just never heard any pro public land position come from either of them.

And what is “Hunternation”? I saw Mike Lee’s post about “I hear you, Hunternation”, but I thought he was referring to hunters as a group who were being very vocal. Is this an actual organization? what do they do? Who is a member?

A quick scroll down that website shows me all of the usual rich prick, outspoken douchebags of the hunting world. No thanks.

So you would prefer if they did not speak up?
No, I appreciate them speaking up. I think Ted Nugent is a terrible ambassador for hunting, but he does carry influence and did speak up. I dop appreciate that, But HunterNation ain't my scene, that's for sure.

Here is Hunter Nation’s official statement regarding the public lands issue:
On behalf of Hunter Nation, the members we represent, all American Hunters, and those Americans who utilize our great public lands, we stand opposed to the indiscriminate sale of our public lands. These lands belong to “We the People” and they should continue to remain as such. We favor the multiple use of our public lands, especially for those who utilize these resources to engage in hunting activities. We urge everyone to reach out to your elected representatives and let them know how you feel about this issue.

Most of the hunters that called won’t get a vote. Utah has a huge block of non-hunting conservative voters. Lee is in very little danger of losing his job.
I agree that he likely won’t be out of work but it needs to be remembered that this wasn’t just hunters. Hikers, bikers, off roaders, campers, etc all did this and when you total all of those up in Utah, that’s a large portion of the state.

Well, I am from Utah and I can attempt to answer some of this.

1. Familiarize yourself with the Sage Brush Rebellion. Its not just Lee that supports this. Its a pretty commonly held belief here, especially the further south and west one goes in this state.

2. Utah was founded by a group of people that were being persecuted and running from the Federal government. There is still a lot of animosity held. The US was founded by rebels, the west is the rebels of the rebels and Utah is the rebels cubed.

The political system in the US has broken down to a level that forces one to vote one way.

Even look at the Big Beautiful Bill as a whole. There is some really good stuff in there and some really bad stuff. We fight to amend and remove the bad stuff but its no different than voting for a politician.

I love public lands. I will fight for them BUT I also really like the ability to tell Mike Lee he can go **** himself, I hate paying taxes and I love the ability to type this from a State owned building with a concealed carry on my hip. Those three things are not something that the other party really supports.

Why does Mike Lee keep getting voted in? Well, there isnt a lot of choices to be honest. We no longer share the same beliefs on the fundamentals that this country was founded on. You are basically forced to vote one way just to preserve your basic rights. That is why he gets elected.
Thanks for the history lesson on the Sage Brush Rebellion, it's an interesting rabbit hole. Apparently Mike Lee's predecessor Orrin Hatch also tried to sell public lands in 1979 and 1981. I'm guessing the Cliven Bundy supporters also fall into this camp?

Yep, it’s nothing new for Utah to try selling it. Been this way for a long time and while it’s changing, it’s slow going. Pretty common held belief the further you get towards central and southern Utah. Especially so in the small towns most have never even heard of.

Yes, generally the Bundy family is pretty anti Fed anything. I don’t follow them much to know all of their beliefs.

I am very pro public lands but we have to find a way to make it easier to utilize them for resources. All the red tape has severely diminished the economy in many areas of Utah and it leaves a bad taste in people mouth.

I actually believe that the land would be better used in States hands but I flat don’t trust the State to keep them. I like to think that the more local governments are better but having grown up in small towns, you learn that all governments are corrupt and self serving. Sometimes it’s better when they do it a large scale so you have a lot of voices to make it known. I can promise you that if this would have just been an Utah level things, the ground would be gone.

I'm sure there were some non-hunters involved, but I didn't see any discussion on this bill from anyone but hunters; and I follow fly fishing, dirt biking, off-roading, and camping social media/forums/circles/etc., but this was just my observation.

I don’t follow any forums outside this one but there was a lot of fishing, hiking and offroad groups/people on social media posting.

There was a huge effort on the part of anglers. backpackers, climbers, backcountry skiers etc. Many of those groups have their own public lands groups (climbers have the Access Fund, for example), but I also noticed that many of these groups were posting Randy Newberg videos for daily updates.

The general truth is that the smaller (more local) the managing agency, the fewer hoops and the easier it becomes to dispose of the lands they manage. We have two national forests, a national park, and a national wildlife refuge in my region. While I haven’t always agreed with their management objectives and practices, their continued land ownership has always been pretty secure. This has not been true for Township, County, or (in some cases) State Forest lands.

The LDS Church has a hedge fund called EnsignPeak. It's rumoured to have over $100B in Assets.

Ensign Peak

Ensign Peak 2

As a practical matter, it's rational for the Ensign Peak folks to want to rotate out of overvalued tech stocks into another asset class.

It's not just them. It's the Saudis, the Gulf States, the Russians. All the resource-rich nations that need to get out of their sovereign wealth being tied to oil.

What asset class do you want to hold really long term, like 100+ years? That'd be land, Bob.

So, as always....follow the money....

I was wondering the same thing. How is this d bag still getting elected term after term?
You could say that about a vast majority of those representing us…it boggles my mind. One sleeps with a Chinese spy yet keeps getting elected. Another said an island would tip over if we put a military base on it, an AR15 shoots a 50 cal bullet, etc, etc.

Some of the absolute biggest idiots get voted in year after year but the system is set to make that happen.

Don Jr has consistently publicly advocated against public land sales since before the first trump presidency. He was frequently pointed to as a good ally to keep daddy informed of our issues. We're lucky to have him on our side in regards to private land stuff even if he's also part of the "good ol boy, buy big animals" club.

I'm pretty sure its a group started by Don Peay which is enough to explain the coziness with mike lee. I'm sure they advocate on the same side of a lot of issues as many of us but still dont really like being aligned with them.

LDS just bought a quarter section just by my parents house in Alabama. I was very intrigued at this especially in consideration of the BBB and mike lee.e
