But, what it comes down to is that no matter how hard people try to find one, there is not a single rifle/scope/bullet on the market that does what the T3x 223/SWFA 6x/77gr TMK does. I’ve shot them all- heavily.
I have a T3X in .223, all factory. Am about to order a CGS Hyperion K for it. Will be used by my grandkids quite a bit. Probably with 77 TMK‘s. I am concerned about the length so am considering cutting it down then threading it. Thinking 17-18” someplace, could go shorter, could go longer, lack experience in this area so seeking opinions. Thank you.

I don’t know much about Tikkas. Would you do the regular T3?

And I’m assuming, the 77 TMK is the best option in the Creed?

Regular T3x is what I/we all do. 77gr TMK or 88gr ELD-M. Most are shooting the 88’s.

Shorter the better. Length for us is determined by har far you want to shoot animals, 1,800fps impact is good for TMK’s. 16” is generally good for about 425-450 yards. 18” about 450-500 yards. All depending on your atmosphere.

An 1-8” twist T3 in 22-250 sent Shaen to be rechambered to 22CM is the easy button and they are good barrels.
I’m sure I missed it and can’t seem to find it, but what is Shaen’s company? Is he on Rokslide? I would love to put a 6mm Creed together since Oregon has a 6mm minimum for elk. Thanks.

Hey Form,
Would you use this same decision making process on other calibers and desired distances for your chosen game?

I’m going to cut down & thread my Fieldcraft 6.5 CM and Kimber 338 fed. Knowing I want the Fieldcraft to be my 600 yd sheep rifle and the Kimber to be a 400 yard Deer/Goat gun, would it be reasonable to punch in numbers in the calculator to find the length that gives me 1800 at those max ranges & most common atmosphere with my preferred ammo?

Curious, what’s the 338 fed do for you at 400 on deer and goats, that the 6.5 cm won’t do?

Thread derail slightly, but the reason I have an ultralight 338 Fed is primarily for hunting on Kodiak Island. Not so much for the primary species, but for close quarter Brown Bear terrain. 200 grain Mono’s make me feel more comfortable than 127 LRX’s.
I say 400 yards just as the furthest point I’d still get 1800 fps in case of a longer than normal deer or goat shot. It’s pretty easy to get 1/10th that distance for both those species on Kodiak. I might cut the 338 down to 16”, which would still get me to that speed, running it with a Rugged Alaskan suppressor that I’m about to order.

Why handicap your rifles with monos on Kodiak?

Penetration. Secondary to that, I don’t want micro bits of lead in my meat. I’ve never had a poor experience from 40-520 yards on any medium size (sheep, goats, deer, caribou) game with either Barnes 127 or Federal Trophy Copper 200. Mostly 1 shot kills with the 6.5 CM besides for a couple that took 2 rounds.

If Tikka would quit fing around and chamber 6 creed in a twist that shoots the 108 factory ammo im down.

But I just can't commit myself to buying a 243 and having a barrel swap done on such a blah rifle.
They aren't blah in the accuracy/reliability departments. In fact, I've found them to be quite exceptional in those regards.

It's just a turn bolt rifle action. It has a few jobs to do, and, IME, the Tikkas do them exceedingly well.

Don't they want about as much for an action as a new rifle?
BRT:

What brand/s of barrels are you getting better accuracy from? I've not shot any better with aftermarket barrels than Tikka OEM, but that could well be mostly a matter of who's doing the aiming.

The last times I needed a new tube I just bought OEM take offs. Other than wanting different twist rates in certain cases, I've been just as satisfied with them.

But, I do agree agree with your thoughts on just buying an action from JA and getting exactly what you want as far as caliber, twist, throat, stock design, etc. I've found the Tikkas to be well worth building on.

Just put this together last night, I’ll go shoot it this weekend with my AR 77tmk loads (8208 xbr around mag length)

1-8” .223 Howa Mini barreled action - Brownells
Stocky’s carbon VG second
Warne 20mao rail
Seekins lows (.83”)
NXS 2.5-10
Javelin bipod

Stock = 20.5oz
Action & bottom “metal” & mag = 64oz
Bare rifle = 5lbs 4.5oz

With scope, sling and Javelin mount = 7lbs 1oz

With suppressor & 10rds= 7lbs 15oz

With lighter scope (credo 3-9) and mounting you could get under 6 1/2lbs easily.

The barrel comes at 22” and threaded 1/2-28 but I’ll cut it down to either 16-18” and run my Nomad Ti. Might get a dedicated 5” can for this gun down the road.

I’ll let y’all know how it shoots and I’ll work up pressure test for this gun so see what I’m getting with 22”. That may play into my decision on wether I go all the way down to 16”.

How have those 200 Trophy Copper performed? I’ve used the 160 TTSX on a dozen or so animals and the 185 TTSX on a couple, but never the heavier monos.

Just shot a blacktail at 40 yards, frontal chest shot, yesterday.. full body pass through. Shot another blacktail today at 50 yards, broadside pass through the heart. Can’t tell ya what the bullet looked like on either, but the bang flop results made me think that they did ok!
