Cold Bore Challenge Q&A Thread

The rules aren't set in stone yet, but here are some details.

The target size will be a 10" circle to replicate a deer's vital zone.

Distance is up to you, but you must push yourself like in the cold bow. Nobody should be claiming their max range from the prone position is 200 yards.

You won't get a pass if you choose 300 yards as your MER just because that's the max at your local range. We are going to have some really great prizes, and people are going to have to put in some work to enter this challenge.

The rest must be a hunting position. Examples of acceptable gear would be a bipod, a tripod, your pack, etc. We won't be allowing benches or "lead sleds."

If a person chooses a distance greater than 600 yards, they first have to go two for two at 600 before they can shoot their max range shots. This will likely gain an extra entry into the drawing.

Instead of five shots like the Cold Bow, we are going to likely go with two shots for this challenge but you still won't be able to practice in between. That means the guys who go for a max past 600 yards will have to shoot four separate days with no shooting in between. You'll have to earn that extra entry.

It's more work because you get an extra entry by qualifying to shoot past 600 yards. If you don't get your shots in there you'll be entered a single time like everyone else that enters the challenge at sub 600 yards.

This is just a reminder that 600 is poke out there, especially in less than ideal conditions. Helps everyone be honest with themselves about their Maximum Effective Range.

This challenge is meant for personal growth not internet bragging rights.

I’ll be shooting past 600. I’m excited to see how my mer changes with conditions. 600 yards and an 8” circle is a fairly easy task prone. Add a strong wind and ONE shot…that’ll change things!

...Mmmmmmm... I'll stick with the steel pans. Had horses & cows with bum feet due to stepping on junk, so I'd hate to introduce any pointy junk where somebody may ride/walk through.

How about a par time. Adds stress which is more realistic. Start position is standing with rifle slung, at the beep you get in position then shoot before time runs out. Easy enough to set a timer on your phone.

I will be following along if I can make the days work. I have typically thought my MER would be 400 but have never had to shoot past 150 at an animal to test it and never tried something like this. Could be pretty humbling.

You'll need to shoot 4 days. One day each for 600 and one day for each for your MER shots.

Remember it's double work for double the entries for the prizes.

I’m surprised when people hint it’s too much effort to to shoot like this, but are coming out West to shoot animals.

I’ve seen this same feedback on the Cold Bow challenge but every year, there are guys and gals who make it happen (there was a guy driving an hour round trip 5 times to qualify). I’ve not received any feedback In 7 years that people said it wasn’t worth their time. Well maybe a few grouches said it, but tiny minority.

If no one signs up for the Cold Bore challenge, we’ll know the rules were too onerous, but I’ll bet we do fine.

This is likely what I'll be doing since most of my plates are 12" squares. Just figured I would paint a 10" circle on the plate.

This is your guys’ competition so you guys are obviously free to make the rules as you see fit but a couple points about doing what you mentioned. First, painting a 10” circle on a 12” square is a big advantage to just shooting a 10” circle. That 12” square has nearly twice the surface area of the 10” circle so it is a much easier target to acquire even if you have the “same size” point of aim. Second, everyone that has shot painted steel knows how those impacts look. You’re going to end up with some “judgement call” impacts around the edge of the circle that could look like they’re on target for square plates that may have been clean misses on circles. Just a couple things to consider. Excited to see the final rules and hope I can get in on this!!

I agree Blacktail. But the mods will make the judgment calls, and I am content with that.
At the same time, this does put more people in the game.
Most of my steel is square/diamond (depending how I index it), and I have a lot of steel, as I put on a yearly LR steel shoot for specialty pistols!
I have a couple of 12" round, but I am not sure if I have 10" round

Valid points but I don't think it really matters for the spirit of this challenge. You don't get entries in the drawing for hits inside the "kill zone." You get entries for pushing yourself and completing the challenge.

As far as point of aim. A deer or elk is much larger than a 10" circle so I don't think painting or marking a kill zone on a larger target is any different.

As realunlucky and Justin have said, this challenge is all about personal growth, personal challenge and finding out your MER and it will certainly show each of us what your limitations will be. And remember.......its also supposed to be FUN!
