Target animal will be spring black bear with roughly an 8” rectangle. The 3D target I’m using has a “kill zone” which is what I’m going off of.


Day 1: gusting wind, this old bear had a rough winter and lost his head...

Day 2: gusting wind again, pulled the shot a little to the right. This arrow actually killed a grizzly last spring. Reckon it’d do the trick again.

Day 3: no wind worth mentioning, felt good about the shot. Still pulling a little to the right.

Day 4: no wind I can blame this one on. Wife’s birthday and I rushed the shot badly. Would’ve been an angry bear...

Day 5: no wind, I think I overcompensated for pulling arrows to the right and shanked this one to the left. Dead bear either way with the shot angle.

Hello guys, My name is Peyton Bertrand and my father Travis Bertrand, and I are shooting the Cold Bow Challenge. I haven't shot in a while so I am shooting 20 yards at a 10 inch circle which is about the size of a deers heart and lungs. I really want to kill an elk though.

My bow is a Hoyt Ruckus Jr. and I am shooting field points on Carbon Express Nano arrows.

Day 1 I shot good, but a little low.


Day 2 I was disappointed on how I shot today. I jerked my bow.

Day 3 was just outside of the vitals. I keep trying to watch my arrow fly and letting down my bow to do it.

Day 4. I felt good and had a good follow through
Day 5 I felt really good. I was relaxed and executed a good shot.

I haven't been shooting as much as id like either! I am shooting 55 yards MER and a 10" circle. I am shooting this year with my Hoyt Defiant 34.

As always, im super excited for this competition. I LOVE watching people grow in this discipline!

Here is my shooting lane. Can’t miss to the right!

Day1 calm wind and a good shot.

Day 2 winds were a little swirly but still got it done

Day 3. Winds were gusty from right to left. Barely got it in there by competition standards!

Day 4. 10 mph wind right to left. I shouldn’t have shot but canted my bow and aimed into the wind. It ended up being a little too much!

Day 5- cold front finally finished blowing in and I ended on a high note!

I’m excited for another year of the cold bow challenge. This year I’m decreasing my MER to 50 yards, kneeling.

I’m shooting my Quest thrive set at a 26” draw and 63#. I shoot Easton 5mm arrows with a 100 grain Mangus stinger broad heads. Arrow setup is 452 grains with a 400 spine. Hot shot wrist release. Black gold five pin slider sight.


Day 1: Gusty cross winds around 10 mph if I guess right, around 52 degrees. Kill shot is upper half of the target center on the duct tape. Super happy with my first shot. Hope it stays that way



Day 2: went to shoot before work. Colder around 40 degrees. No wind. Pretty pleased with my shot. I also re-duct taped my target so she’ll make it another year.


Day 3: continued 50 yards kneeling. Shot again before work, little colder around 35 degrees. I think I squeezed my left hand and jerked it to the left. Just outside of my desired kill zone.

Day 4: shot before work 50 yards keeling. I pulled it again same as the last shot. In my defense I haven’t shot at all yet this year.


Day 5: shot this evening about 6:00. Around 60 degrees and Very windy. I knelt behind our propane tank to get steady and shot with a crosswind. I knew it would effect the shot so I tried my best to hold a little to the left. The shot felt good and I’m pleased with it considering.


I really enjoy this competition, it gets me pumped for the coming year to get out and shoot regularly. Thanks rokslide!

I picked an MER of 25 yds. I hunt in Texas mainly so plan on limiting myself to that distance for now. I’ve been shooting Trad for about 6 months.

Day 1: Calm, about 7 PM in the Evening, Shot felt pretty good today. Just low and left of center





Day 2: Similar conditions as day 1 not really any significant wind. I think I peeked a little here. I hate that I have to live with this shot a whole day haha.


Day 3: Got my shot in early this morning before work got going. Still pretty calm as far as wind goes, but it was a little chilly. I can definitely live with this one today. Release felt pretty good.


Day 4: I suck again. Took this shot right before heading to the gym. Guess I rushed it and had a crappy release. I’m sure i tried to peek again as well. Waaay left.


Day 5: Decided to take this shot as soon as I got back from dropping the kid at daycare. A little sleep deprived from the last couple of nights. Another calm, cool morning here. I think this shot was a result of my head positioning. This challenge was a bit of an eye opener as I’m sure it is for many others. I need to really focus on consistency more than i have in the past. To those involved, thanks for getting everything organized for the CBC. Look forward to the next one.

I haven’t been shooting much and am shooting a lot lower poundage so my MER is 30 yards for this. Hoyt Hyperforce at 55 pounds, 4 mm axis w/ 25 grain brass inset with a 4 fletch, 125 gr Bishop Archery Scientific Method fixed blade, and a Nock 2 it release. Really windy and some snow for day one. I pulled it left.

Day 2. Perfect conditions. 25 degrees and calm. Arrow is in the same hole as last shot but this time I saw the arrow take a noticable veer to the left halfway to the target. If the rest of the shots go that way I’ll have retune the whole set up.

Day 3. Starting to think this arrow is consistently bad. Shot felt good and bend to left was same as yesterday. Definitely going to retune everything after the challenge is over.


Day 4. 25 degrees a little sleet. At least I am consist.

Day 5: 39 degrees and rain. Notice that there no target in the picture. A clean miss to the left. This one was the same elevation at the rest but an inch to the left than the others. Pretty disappointed in my arrow flight as I had this set up dialed last season out to 60 yards. Good thing there is plenty of time till the season!

Going to have a 9" paper plate as my target, I mostly archery hunt for elk sometimes a mulie if presented an opportunity. Have shot a couple times this spring nothing past 40 yet so ready strectch the limit.

Day 1: windy day today got a good shot off, 50 degrees with some sunshine.


Day 2: 40 degrees, slight breeze, shot didn't feel great but was in the ringer. Doggie was there to check on my shot.


Day 3: gusty wind couldn't hold still to shoot, so just tried to time it, off to the edge.


Day 4: rainy day, no wind shot was low


Day 5: snuck out after the rain and got the final shot off, wind blowing to the east, guess i like that area low and left

ok, after 4 hours on a plane, 6.5 hours/450 miles of driving, I made it home, dashed out the the backyard and made my first shot. Pretty lousy overall...MER = 50 yards, bow is my Hoyt RX4 Ultra, Ironwill 100gr vented BH. 7 inch kill zone, Clear, light wind, 55 degrees.
Was good to go straight from the car to shooting one arrow only. A bit of stress for sure.

Day2 clear, no wind, 49 degrees

Day 3...changed to my back tension release instead of using the thumb release. Much better results. 7:20 am mst, chilly 49 degrees with a light breeze. The pups were trying to get in on the action, glad they didnt pee on my arrow

Day 4 warmer and no wind.

Day 5...so glad to be done. This really exposed my inability to shoot well with my thumb release. My last 3 days were with my tension release which is all I have shot with over the winter. Added tape measure to show kill zone size - 7 inch diameter.

Random Details No One Asked For
By far my biggest form challenges right now are 1) keeping my front shoulder down 2) keeping my arm extended and 3) using too much top pressure with my grip. My Silverback seems to highlight all of those because if I screw up #1 or #2, I end up pulling FOREVER and yanking my shots low and right. If #3 isn't right, I drop all my shots low. I'm also pretty sure that on one of these shots, I'm going to pre-load the release too much and it'll fire as soon as I let off the safety.

Day 1 - 60 degrees, partly cloudy, little to no wind. I got to the range this morning between dropping the kids off at school and heading to work. I had planned to shoot at 50 yards, but when I stepped back I ranged it at 54 yards and decided to give it a go from there. All the practice over the weekend helped out and shot #1 went right where I wanted it to. Now I just need to repeat that four more times!

Day 2 - 55 degrees, clear, no wind. Hit a little high but it’s in there.

Day 3 - South Texas decided to give me a taste of that South Dakota shooting, winds gusting straight into my face at 15-20 mph. Set up felt good, pin settled fine, but the Silverback went off as soon as I released the safety. I’m guessing I was so focused on the wind that I forgot to relax my release hand. I was shocked the arrow was still (barely) in the circle. I guess there’s something to be said for a surprise shot.

Day 4 - Breezy with some gusts, ~10 mph but enough to push the bow around. Pin never settled and instead of letting down and collecting myself, I pulled through. As soon as I released it I knew my grip was wrong and I torqued it right out of the vitals.

Day 5 - No wind, humid with some drizzle. Shoot went off early again, but the pin float was good before I released the safety. 4/5 and now it’s time to start investigating why I’m hitting consistently right of center.

That’s the point I guess! Brand new archer here bought my Diamond bow Nov 2020 and shot every day for the first few months, shooting on 3-4 days a week on average now. Lucky for me I can shoot to about 80 yards at my house and I’m fairly proficient at that range so I thought 55 would be a breeze. Doesn’t take much pressure to throw you off!

MER: 55y shooting at a vital size of 6-7” for mostly white tails.
Bow: Diamond Infinite edge pro set at 70lbs
Sight: black gold ascent verdict 3 pin on 6” dovetail
Stabilizer: bee stinger 12” w/ 3oz

Day 1: clear sunny day, no wind. My target panic pull is always high and that’s what we see here





Day 2: sunny and 75, decently windy, should have let down, didn’t, punched it left and now I get to sit for 24 hours thinking about 2 missed shots. NO EXCUSES


finally, I sucked (a little) less. Sunny, 75, absolutely perfect day here in central Texas.

Day 4, no wind, buried to the fletch in the vitals!!

Fifth and final shot. Got out early this morning and shot probably 40 minutes into shooting light. A little overcast, but completely calm morning.

First time doing the CBC. Just got a new bow this year and spent this weekend sighting it in. First day was today.

MER: 40 yards with a vital area of about 8-9” circle (Whitetail and mule deer, target is to be in the main ring of the 18-1)

DAY 1
Well..... I missed. First day and shot about 12” high and gave the tree behind it a nice split. Left and right is perfect. Sevr 2.0 stuck in and will take An axe to get out. The shot had about a 10’ drop and when I sighted it in I was on level ground but I don’t think that should account for a 12” miss. Normal conditions 42º and 3-5mph wind at most. (Zoom in on the tree in the second picture to se the arrow.)
DAY 1 UPDATE: Got home from work and instantly went to look at my bow. It drove me crazy the last half of the day at work on why I completely missed the target at 40. Then I look at my sight tape, and I moved it from 60 to 50 not all the way to 40. See the 4th picture, the top mark is 20 and each tick down is 10 yards. This is what happens when you sight in over the weekend and don't put an actual sight tape on. Now hoping day 2 is better but also hoping it has a learning experience with it as well. Trying to take something from each day I can improve on.

DAY 2
WHEW! Its in the ring! Perfect broadhead deployment and flight. Was focused way too much on the big ring and not just hitting the center. Punched the trigger a little when I "thought" the fin was in the middle. Was just too excited to get another shot fired and redeem myself. Weather: 40° and 3-5mph wind again.
Lesson today: be patient with your shot, and TRUST your shot process.. Let the pin float and follow through. One thing I like to tell myself even before drawing my bow is "follow through" and I didn't do that today.

DAY 3
Took my time and took a few deep breaths before drawing back. Shot felt solid and very happy with where it ended up. 3-4 inches off of center. With the bow only being sighted in this previous weekend and these being the first 3 shots with broadheads I cant expect too much more than that. It will be interesting to see if the next two days I continue to hit high and right. Also might try shooting a 4 fletch arrow tomorrow and see if that has any effect. CBC is turning out to be a great time to see what works best when the pressure is on!

DAY 4
Always improving! An inch closer to the middle. Today was sunny and 55° and minimal wind again. It is nice the bluff I live on typically blocks all the wind. Last three days were cloudy and the sun today did make the sight picture slightly different but executed a good shot. I would say 3/4 on the week. Starting to see the consistent high right hit so just need to slightly adjust the sight but don't want to do that until I am done with CBC and can take more than one shot at a time to verify. I will add it is not in the picture but have shot the last 2 days with my tight spot quiver on with 4 arrows loaded to simulate hunting more.

DAY 5
Just like that the week is over and the last shot for the CBC taken. Saved the best for last. Took an extra 3-5 seconds on letting the pin hover on the target and executed the shot. It was great to see a constant improvement day after day. What I have found to be the greatest part about the CBC is no one is competing with anyone other than themselves. The 5 days have highlighted my eagerness and how I can rush shots. I have always seen it but never taken into account how that might effect a hunting scenario. Thank you to @robby denning and Rokslide for putting this on and you will see me again next year!

Day 1 - 70 degrees no wind. Aiming at the brown circle in center of the target. pin settled pretty good shot broke clean and it felt pretty good. Few inches left.


Day 2 - haven’t shot since day 1, which was 3 days ago. Sort of similar to a real hunting situation. Had about a 20 mph left to right wind. Pin never settled great kind of fought it but shot broke and ended up about 5 inches right and High.

day 3 - really focused on the push pull today. Pin settled and shot broke right when I engaged the back tension. Surprised me and the iron will flew true.

Day 4. 12-15 mph cross wind. Pin didn’t settle great but I found myself thinking about when the back tension would go off instead of being completely focused on the pin. Shot broke and it was a few inches low.

Day 5 - 15 mph headwind. Pin held solid and shot broke great just might have dropped a little. Overall happy with how the challenge went, shooting broadheads with a new release. Can take this info and move forward now and prepare for season.

Day 1: No wind, 67 degrees

Surprised myself on this one, typically I pull a few inches left at this distance. Target is a little rotten from the winter so the arrow punched through. Nowhere to go from here but down!



Day 2: No wind, 60 degrees. Held back my draw a little long and pulled it a little left.



Day 3: No wind again, benefits of living in the trees. Was pretty sleepy eyed on this one, which allowed me to be nice and relaxed.

Day 4: Light breeze right to left. Been shooting as soon as I get up and today it showed. Punched the trigger before I was ready and sent it low and left.


Day 5: No wind

First CBC for me. Just picked up the bow and have less than 30 shots through it. Still have some work to do for getting it tuned. With the new bow and windy conditions, my MER is only 40 yards. Will get that increased before season. Look forward to this...

just a light 23 mph wind from 4 o'clock, 40°F, standing


Day 2: another windy SOB and can hardly keep the pin on the target from the gusts. Definitely a good reminder that MER is very dependant on the conditions and would never take a shot at this distance at an animal with the wind.




Day 3: Wind was much better today. 13 mph and about 52°F. Shot was taken in a standing position.


Day 4: 32°f and 12 mph wind. Shot was taken standing.


Day 5: 32°f and just a slight breeze. Shot was standing. I went into this with a bow that was too new and not ready to go yet. Now that it is over, I'm anxious to get the bow in the press and get it dialed in and to continue taking the cold shots with broadheads throughout summer and season.

This year I bumped my MER up 5 yards to 55 yards. The vital area I am targeting is referenced in shot #3 below.

Shot #1 - 65 degrees and sunny. Breeze around 10mph coming from my right. Left and right is ok but punched the trigger before I brought the pin down into the vitals.

Shot #2 - 65 degrees and cloudy. Breeze again today around 10mph coming from my right. Pulled left.

Shot #3 - 44 degrees and cloudy. 15mph breeze from right to left. Pulled left again.

Shot #4 - 55 degrees and sunny. No wind. I am either continuing to pull left or maybe my sight is off. Up until this challenge I hadn’t shot since mid November when I killed a buck. Once I finish up my 5th shot i will be spending some time to figure this out.

Shot #5 - 65 degrees and partly cloudy. Slight breeze around 5mph from right to left. I held on the right side of my target area and hit in the kill zone.

CBC 2021, using my Elite, set at 60#, gold tip hunter XTs, 340s cut to 27”, fletched from factory, 50 grain aluminum gold tip inserts, 125 grain magnus black hornet 2-blade broadheads. This arrow setup is heavier then I’ve ever used, tried to get the FOC up. 60 yard MER, decided to sit down and shoot from the ground, no quiver for the shot, simulated stalking a mule deer and having time to prep before it stands up. Vital zone ~10” circle.

day 1- wind left to right, didn’t hold for wind, sun in my eyes, target in the shade. Shot felt good, hit quite left, depending on animal presentation, could have been okay, could have turned messy.

day 2- calm conditions, shot felt good, focused on following through, hit a few inches right of center, very pleased with that

day 3- very gusty, dust in the air, so the sun wasn’t so blinding. I decided to draw and then wait for a lull in the wind. The lull came but my pin had settled lower than I wanted. Hit at the lower edge of the circle. Not ideal but honestly would have been happy with that in the field.

day 4- bursts of wind in my face, blowing the bow a bit. Held for a few more seconds, then started to get target panic, and regretfully, sent the arrow on its way. My accuracy and confidence is higher with this setup than any I’ve had before, but that’s not enough, still need to keep the pin where you want it, and squeeze the trigger then follow through. Would not have been a good thing in the field to have taken this shot at game.

day 5- slight wind in my face, had a hat to shield the sun. Shot felt okay. Hit was terrible, did not expect that. Quite disappointed in my performance this challenge. I really thought I’d be able to keep them in the kill zone at 60. Now with the challenge done, I’ll do some more shooting, the bow seems solid, I’m sure I’ll just need to tighten up the loose nut behind the trigger...

Cold bow challenge shot #1
I set my MER at 60 yards and am using the kill zone on my 1/3 caribou for a target. Shooting an obsession defcon set at 29.5/70. It's a little short for me but it works.

Shot #2
I went out last night full of confidence because I've been shooting so well, rushed my set up and shot annnd...... clean miss. I was pretty pissed at myself for losing an x-impact with ethics a lighted nock and a shuttle-t broadhead but that's what I get for not taking my time to set up properly and pull through my shot. Lesson learned!

Shot #3

Got back on track tonight! Took my time and settled into my shot. Took my time at full draw and pulled through my shot like I know I'm supposed to! Very happy with my change from yesterday. I've been lucky with 70's Temps and no wind to speak of. Our typical Washington rain is coming though.

Worked my full shift today, came home and did yard work for 3.5hrs then took this shot when I was good and tired at the end of the evening. Plus a pic of my shooting lane.

This one felt great. Everything felt like it came together prefect on this shot and I was positive it was in the 12 until I walked up lol oh well still happy with my results overall. I'd rather have a clean miss than a bad bit.

Entering the CBC for the first time -- getting ready for turkey this spring but the goal is always mule deer & elk in the fall. I like to make sure I'm accurate within a good 6-8" zone no matter what.
Setting my MER at 50 yds, using a 6" diameter sticker on my Rinehart 18-1 as my primary target zone.

DAY 1 -- no wind, 30° F and starting to snow. Standing shot, actually felt really good and steady, slight torque to the left. My goal for the coming days is to keep up consistency, maybe try different shooting positions.

DAY 2 -- ~5mph breeze, 36° F.
Shot execution and placement is less than ideal today. Will need to tinker a bit tonight with the sight and my stabilizer setup to determine if it is me or the broadhead


DAY 3 -- 10mph cold breeze, 32° F.
Another wild flyer today! The broadhead is really revealing a lot I hadn't noticed w/field points. Since my shot break didn't feel that bad, I felt obligated to get my bow checked afterwards...learned the cam timing was off and nock low.
I'll move my sights again for tomorrow, and fingers crossed!


Day 4 -- honest to goodness! this feels like the most impossible outcome, I was excited to walk up on this today...
Though I really think this was a combo of luck, the right adjustments, and great weather (NO Wind, sunny and 51°) I'll take the confidence boost today


Made it to Day 5 -- I had a crazy busy day yesterday but got my shot in, just now posting it.
Very gusty from my left, but overall a nice 52°. I put my quiver on and adjusted my stabs since I'll be turkey hunting over the weekend. I held my pin at the edge of the target zone, and that proved good with the wind and some torque coming from the extra weight.



Honestly this challenge was awesome and so revealing
(I actually attempted a day 6 cold shot at 40 before heading up the mountain, and missed my target completely high)
Every day has been different even though some of my shots ended up fine, mentally it was hard to feel confident and it showed plenty of weaknesses in my shot process.
Thanks Robby and Rokslide! I have a lot to work on and plan to implement this in regular preseason practice
