To get into the shooting area, it was about a 1.5 mile / 1500 foot elevation gain to a ridgeline. With my trusty pup leading the way, we pointed ourselves uphill. About an hour later we reached the ridgeline. Did I mention it was raining? By 2245 (10:45pm), the target was set up and I moved back to my shooting position.

Day 1 / Shot 1, 27 2335 JUN 2025: 10” Plate, 555 yards, light wind 2-5 mph at 80-100 degrees. Dialed 3.5 elevation and .2 right for wind: Impact but higher than I’d like. The target was knocked over so I broke down my position and headed down the ridge to set up for Day 2 / Shot 2.

With the 2025 Cold Bore Challenge complete, my pup and I descended down and back to the truck. We were asleep by 3 am and up and 7am for a fun Saturday of kids sports and such.

MER 420 yards.

I picked my MER because it is 70 yards further than I have ever shot a deer. I have never fired my CZ 527 in 6.5 Grendel at any target further than 200 yards away. Using the Scythe Ti, Harris Bipod, Pac-Nor 18" barrel, and Bausch & Lomb Scope Chief 3-9x40 scope. No rear bag because I didn’t own one until late last week.

My nephew didn’t catch the whole thing, but I was supposed to be simulating coming up over the hill and seeing the deer in the pasture. It would not have been a speed drill, but a reasonably quick shot.

Ammo is Hornady 123-grain SST. Chronograph says 2509 FPS. The scope only has a standard reticle, so I was using Kentucky windage. The wind was swirling a bit, some trees at the 200 appeared to be blowing a bit from left to right, but further up, I thought there might be a stronger right to left wind. If I had looked down the valley (to my right), I would have seen a thundercloud barreling towards me and probably made a better wind call. As it was, I ended up holding about 40" high and roughly dead center. My shot ended up a finger length outside the 10" ring. Maybe tomorrow morning there will be less wind. Or I can make a better wind call.

Edit - day 2 - another miss:

This time the wind was blowing from left to right and I felt like it was a pretty good value. But, once again, the semi-protected position from which I was shooting caused me to underestimate how hard it was blowing closer to the target. I held roughly the same elevation and about a foot left (still Kentucky windage). I missed just a little outside the 10” ring and a little low.

Here’s the rifle (sans bipod):
