Spot hogg wise guy release

i will be shooting field tips for this challenge

I am just getting back to shooting after my 3rd rotator cuff surgery and picked up my bow for the first time a couple weeks ago.

Day 2! 4/21/20
17 mph winds here blowing from the south. Right to left. Pretty nasty out. 2 inches high and about 1 inch left
cd7ba651f3e2e2c7893ed365b797192c.jpg

Day 3 4/22/21
5 mph winds straight in my face. We are in the money today. Clean break and release

Day 4 4/25/21

22 mph hour winds. Really nasty here in Vegas this weekend. Shot was high left. Still In the vitals

Day 5 4/27/21
10 mph winds. Pushed another shot just left Of my mark.
These 5 days of shooting have been great and very eye opening. 1 out of the 5 shots was perfect. Each shot would have been a double lung shot. I feel like it was a combination of me opening up and the wind that was causing me to push shots left of my aim point.

I want to play
shot 1 - 4/21/21
Hackberry selfbow I recently finished
25 yards MER
maybe 65 pounds at 28 (no way to measure)
550 grain arrow. 250 grain grizzly up front.
Low heart kill
shot 2- 4/22/2021
A little higher, kill
shot 3- 4/23/2021
too low, getting it higher tomorrow
shot 4- 4/25/21 got it higher
shot 5- 4/26/21 finally up in the lungs. Maybe a little forward.

Fun challenge! I don't think I'll be shooting much further than 18 yards with this thing.

Excited to be apart of this challenge, this is my first year giving it a shot defiantly ready to get back to consistent shooting

Mission MXR at 68 lbs
Valkyrie 300 spine, 29 in reign shafts 200 gr tip
Carter release

50 yard max effective range, planning on hunting anything from turkey to elk with the bow this year so, I chose a challenging (for me) vital size of 5 x 5 inches displayed in the second pic.

  1. Honestly happy with the result considering the windy day I say an effective shot.
  2. Another gusty afternoon, held full draw for what seemed to be forever, could have let down but are you gonna let down with an toad staring at you. Still a vital hit for sure.

I’ve owned a bow for 7 years or so, but haven’t shot it much as my dad only rifle hunts and I want to hunt with him while I still can. That said, I’ve my second child is due in October, so I’ve been thinking about giving archery a shot this year so figured this challenge would give me the chance to jump start target practice for the year. Here’s the details:

MER- 35 yards
Bow- Bowtech Carbon Overdrive 65lbs
Arrow- Carbon Express Maxima Red 250
Broadhead- Trophy Taker Shuttle T-Lock 125gr

Shot #1
35 Degrees
Wind left to right at 15 MPH
Yikes, I need to practice a lot this summer
75DFC4F2-9032-418B-A9B2-947D5ECBAD8A.jpeg

Shot #2
Had to take a couple days off for work, but it did me good. Had a light breeze straight at my back (bad for hunting, good for shooting!). Also a nice 60 degrees out today. Shot was slight light low, but should be a a low heart shot.
C07D4A25-EE18-4E96-AB6B-80F252BA1794.jpeg

Shot #3
Super happy with this shot. Slightly low but still solidly in the vitals. 76 degrees here today with a 5-8mph breeze quartering right to left from my back. Side note- I was worried how far my arrow penetrated the target yesterday, so threw a hay bale behind it to make sure I didn’t punch all the way through today. The bale worked in stopping the arrow, but swallowed the broadhead and did some digging to recover ha.
3EEADBD2-0C3A-4DA4-A941-AFF1757A33EC.jpeg

Shot #4
Nice conditions again this morning, 50 degrees with a light breeze right to left. Barely snuck this one in my 8” vital zone, but it’s in! This challenge has been eye opening and has given me confidence that with enough shooting this summer, I can be capable enough to hunt with my bow in the fall! Heading out turkey hunting for the week and will shoot my last shoot when I get back at the end of the week.
6D8F5B4E-634D-4B4F-A216-80EBE0C522AA.jpeg

5th Shot
87 degrees today with with light breeze again quarter away right to left. Hit low and left again (not sure if it’s a sight or shooter issue), but am solidly in the vital zone again. Really enjoyed this challenge and has motivated me more than ever to shoot my bow much more this summer and finally take it out hunting this fall! Thanks for putting it on, cool to see so many people participating. Very impressed with the level of archers on this board as well!

Here are my five shots. All field points from 40 yards (my MER). Been shooting for a little over a year and have been a fan of one shot practices and MER shots for a few months. Shooting on a Genesis Gen-X Compound bow, a Tru-Fire Smoke Release, Easton arrows, and a Cooper John 3 pin sight. My shooting goal is to hunt turkey.

OK I’ll post this here because for some reason this year we have too many people shooting and they don’t tell us/show what their vital size is. Doesn’t count just to be able to hit the target. Tell us what your vital sizes, tape it off on the target if it’s not clear!

Second year of this cold bow challenge, i think i had one vad shot last year. So im trying 60 yards again. Shooting at an 8” ish square (to the outside) Ive been slacking on practicing with my new bow. So this will help kick start that back up. Shooting a mathews vxr 31.5 at 70 lbs and 29.5” draw. Hamskea trinitity rest, spot hog 5 pin fast eddie sight. Tight spot quiver. Easton axis arrows 300 spine with 50 grains of brass and a 100 grain FIELD POINT up front. Nock to it release.
First day arrow hit good. Cool day real light breeze blowing slightly from the right of the target and back towards me. No impact on holding the bow steady.
1619048917088.jpeg
second day arrow slightly low but in yet. Light breeze from target to me. No impact on holding. Also realised i didnt hit post after typing this up. Also hoping its not double posted.
1619048958895.jpeg
Skipped a day. Shot today while it was a bit breezy cross wond right to left. Was able to be out of the win thanks to my barn. Had swirls hitting me but was able to shoot between gusts and center punched arrow number three.
1619209423483.jpeg
Arrow 4: calm overcast morning. Shot felt dexent, a little lower then id like and a hair right but still in the zone.
1619273162041.jpeg
Last arrow had a light breeze straight in my face. Was holding pretty solid on the zone and blew out of it as the shot broke off and sailed it five miles high. So close yet so far

So are the 3D animals with a vital insert acceptable for this requirement? I shot my 5 arrows at a 1/3 scale elk target with a vital insert. I assumed that was good to go but if I need to make adjustments I can.

3D is fine as vitals are typically easily seen. Thanks

Well here it goes for year 2. This year I am shooting my hoyt rampage at 60lbs 30" draw gold tip hunter pro 340 with 4 fletch 100 grain field points since I am in the middle of a move and not sure where my b.h. are. Hha single pin at 50 yardsKIMG1432.JPG
First day had calm winds and sunny. I am using the red area as a killzone and this shot just barely made it.
KIMG1431.JPG
Day 2 calm winds again but I think I pulled it up this time.
KIMG1433.JPG
Day 3 winds were off and on gusty and was able to hold long enough to get in-between gusts but man that pin was starting to shake all over. I think if this had been a deer in front of me I would have let down and either let him walk or redrawn once I gained my conposureKIMG1437.JPGDay 4 was calm again not sure what happened with this shot but it is definitely obvious that I need more bow time during the off season.KIMG1440.JPG
Day 5 was calm again. Interesting this year everything hit left last year everything hit right. Gonna have to get in with someone and have them check me over and make sure everything is where it needs to beKIMG1469.JPG

Hickory backed cedar bow 59# at 29”
Footed wood shafts with wild turkey feathers, 125 grain field point, 570 grains total

MER of 30 yds for a whitetail (optimistic)

Shooting an ultra poor person version of a 3D target. Kill zone is 6” by 9”

Day 1: very windy, it’s barely in there

4D993C01-6A54-4381-9B5B-45A7108ACD9F.jpeg

Day 2: very windy again, dropped the shot low again. This time outside the vitals.

CEF74968-41B1-40C6-BA32-A0B94236FB8B.jpeg

Day 3: perfect weather, very frustrating, I think I overestimated my shooting with the new bow
444AD01A-82E5-4E73-A742-D135C82FAF4A.jpeg

Day 4: perfect weather, changed my point of aim just a little and it helped.
63DB0BCC-A7E4-4E51-A0EE-5CC8EBCC80D2.jpeg
Day 5: a little dark and Smokey here. I’m glad to be back to shooting multiple arrows.

Pretty disappointed overall but there’s a lot of time left until September.

My 6yo son. His First shot was with mine on Saturday. And he was a little confused why we were only shooting one arrow. Took him out today and fired another single arrow off. But changed the target setup since his first shot. He’s shooting at the legless doe with a diamond atomic from about ~9 yards. With the foam goat target in the background just in case. Weather for second is chilly here in central pa we had snow this morning

Day 3. Much warmer than yesterday. Low 60’s with an intermittent breeze. I may have made him nervous before the shot. I told him to creep up slow and if he misses it’s going to run. He Ended up shooting high

Day 4. Left and right is good but still hi
Day5. Couldn’t have asked for a better shot to finish off day 5. He was all smiles

Cold Bow Challenge!

54.5 yards / 10-Degree down angle.

100Gr Ironwill Solid Broadhead, 50gr insert with 25 gr stainless impact collar. BE Rampage, 4-flech AAE Stealth and Firenock. 513 total gr arrow. Hoyt RX-1, 30" draw @ 70lbs hitting 289 ft/sec.

1st shot: 4/26
Shot felt good. A little bit of wind from right to left. Didn’t feel like I pulled it or crept out of my peep, but it’s barely in the vitals. 5F8114F5-A9DE-4DBB-8BC8-A8D0550C1A9D.jpeg
4/26 edit...I just spun my arrow and WHOA...my arrow was wobbling all over the place! New head for the next 4 shots.

2nd Shot: 4/27
Got in a great 7 mile ruck and then immediately shot. I did drop my pack. I didn’t notice any better arrow flight than yesterday but, after swapping the bent broadhead, the result makes me MUCH happier.

3rd Shot: 4/28

Gotta love Colorado in April...slight weather change. Zero wind...but a nice heavy spring snow. A snowflake hit me right in the nose as the shot broke...real Sept hunting conditions and I’m happy with the result. I’m so impressed with these broadheads, and I love watching that firenock fly through the snow.

4th Shot: 4/29
Well, $&@!...I really rushed this one. Perfect day, no wind and all of the snow has already melted. I so badly wanted to see it in the middle I sped through my process and tried to hold tight on target rather than trusting my float. Well sure enough, I felt myself drop low and I forced my pin higher right as the shot broke. Lousy shot...out of the vitals.

5th Shot: 4/30
Last day of April, last shot of the 2021 Cold Bow Challenge! This has been really fun...and super challenging not shooting in between! I’ll be happy to get to fling more than one arrow a day. No wind or glare this morning...perfect conditions. The arrow ended up a little forward of where I want it, but the target is slightly quartering to from where I am shooting from. Awesome challenge!

Cold Bow Challenge.
Had rotator cuff surgery in December 2020. Hadn't shot a bow from March 2020 until March 2021. Turned the bow down "3" turns and started to shoot at 10 yards in March. For this challenge I chose 40 yards as my MER. My draw length is 29''

BOW: Hoyt Carbon Sypter Turbo. Was 72 lb draw but turned it down three turns (no clue what the actual draw weight is now). GAS strings. Black Gold Pure 75 with pins 20,30,40,50,60. 60 is the slider. Hamseka hunter pro drop away rest. Shooting Easton FMJ (5mm) 340s cut to 25 3/4'' (carbon to carbon). 50g brass insert with 100 gr. Steel Force Phat head broadhead. 3 AAE max hunter vanes total arrow weight is 494 grains.
Target: 17in1. I am aiming center center. The black center circle is 2.5" in diameter.
32e54098e595e974c9c7482332620dbb.jpg

Shot #1 (4/23). Slight downward angle. No wind. Shot felt good, shoulder felt good.

2186040a7c44f32a0ab8ff95a06f0bb1.jpg

Shot #2 (4/24). Zero angle, zero wind, couple dozen mosquitoes. Shoulder felt wonky (spent the previous evening pulling out my injection pump). But shot broke good (felt relaxed).
612bb87b0e402806180fde18c8e0919f.jpg

Shot #3 (4/24). No angle, no wind. Hot! Shot was low about 2-2.5 inches consistent with the previous shots. Once the CBC is over I will be resighting.

49462bd41a537008ec7dd31b2abac622.jpg

Shot #4 (4/25). Zero angle, wind was in my face, lovely gentle breeze and judging by the action of my luscious locks it was about 3.2 knots. Shoulder felt really good as did the shot. Decided to aim at the top of the large circle and that compensated for the low impact noted in the previous shots. After day 5 I will resight the bow for sure.
1a8bc0b071d57ab02f078769c8573d30.jpg

Shot #5 (4/29). Zeron angle. Overcast, calm with no wind. Form felt good, shot felt good. Aimed high as in the previous shot and it centered the impact. Going to resight all pins today or tomorrow.

605eb2b01f154e1e556ecb7611423d8c.jpg

Realized I was not posting a picture of the broadhead I am using. Basically it is a poor mans Iron will. In talking with the guy behind the Iron Will brand, I believe he said the main difference he found between the Iron Wills and this head is Edge retention. These steel force heads will not keep a sharp edge through contact like an Iron Will.

Hopefully i snuck in at the last minute. This challenge is awesome. No better way to true those pins for that single shot opportunity. My MER is 75 shooting at a glendel buck with OL faithful slicktricks
Bow, Elite Energy 35 72# 29.5 DL
CBE engage 5 pin. QAD rest and b stingers front and side. Goldtip hunter xt with brass 50 insert and 100 grain slicktricks.
Day 1 legit 10 to 12 wind from about 4 o clock. Should be a short track job

Day 2 typical nv breeze 5 to 6. Little low but short track job.

Day 3 ouch. I never would have taken the shot in the conditions at that range but for the sake of the challenge I wanted to push it. About 18" drift right.

Day 4. New target. (At work) About an 8 inch vital size cutout. Black dot is heart. I needed this after day 3

Day 5 slid it in there. Obviously need to slide up my pin a hair for all 5. Chanhed the angle of the shot but dead buck. Thanks for pushing us

My range will be 50 yards this year.
Plate is 7"
Hoyt Carbon Element
3 pin MBG slider
Hamskea rest

70#
Easton axis 340 with 100gr field trip.
Missed out last year hopefully I am in time this year.

First shot sunny and 52 with a decent breeze quartering to me.

2nd Day was sunny and 70 with a 30 mph wind at my back but it swirls at this range. So I had a pretty good pin float going but I happened to let it go at the right time.
3rd days shot posting a day late. Conditions were perfect. 70 and calm.

4th shot. New scenery as I haven't had time to get to my go to range. Still 50 yards but this location is not nearly as protected. I got lucky on this shot as there was a 20 mph crosswind.

This is a pretty cool idea for a challenge!

MER at 50 yards. Shooting my Mathews VXR with a fixed 7 pin trophy ridge, and a Hamskea rest. The Stalk Archery 4mm silent series arrow, with a 2 blade OzCut BH.
Day 1, Sunday, 50 yards.

DAY 2

Well, I guess it could always be worse?!
this has got me thinking I need to practice cold bow shots more often. Shooting groups makes it a lot easier to pretend they’re all great shots!

DAY 3
Heavy wind going right down range. Not a shot any animal would likely allow. About 6” under the bottom of my “vital box”, went right thru the lighter target underneath, second picture is it sticking out the back. 90FC946A-F1DD-4382-BCCF-6A7070062804.jpeg

DAY 4
Heavy winds down range again. I’m really liking this challenge, but it is a bit of a reality check. I have to say it makes me feel really uneasy not sending a few more arrows to make me forget the ones that wander a bit.

DAY 5!
By far the calmest day, next to no wind. (That’s a welcome change!) I was able to slow down a little bit and had a better shot than some of the others. F6D12C90-94A0-487A-BB9D-5D13557B8EC3.jpeg

Hoping to hunt mule deer this year, should draw the tag. But for sure hunting elk this year!
Well, I guess that’s it for this challenge. I really liked how this made me think about my shot. (As always) needs more practice!

MER is 50 yards first shots since late December. I've never shot a deer over 30 so this is pushing it for me.

Goal is a 8 inch circle for whitetail.

Day1/5

Day 2/5 Overcast and slight crosswind, A little closer to the my 8 inch goal.

Day 3/5 Really realizing I need to shoot more (Including my broadheads) I think I'm going to try a different head for days 4 and 5. I was shooting pretty well at 40 with my Ironwills at the end of last season.
