2025 Cold Bore Challenge Q&A Thread

My boys and I finished tonight. Posts 94, 95 & 96. I posted their videos and pics up for them and I'll have them write something tomorrow. I got an ear full on the way home from my oldest about him outshooting me this year. He just can't figure out how he got to be such a good shot because I suck. 😂

My steel is hammered too. There is a slight chance my middle boy put one through an existing hole in the target but I think he just missed. I need to get my new steel hung and practice more.

If you are lucky you will get your revenge on those big talkin’ kids in a few years when they are packing your animals out….and their packs are much heavier than yours!

Finished my last shot this evening. The AB app gave me 0.6 more mils of holdover than Monday 5.3 vs 4.7 so I need to work on getting that figured out and there was a much stronger cross canyon wind than estimated resulting in my initial shot being ~0.7 mil right of target. I definitely pushed myself on the 600+ bonus shots and paid the price. I’ll be posting day 4 video once it loads to YouTube.

I tried to write on my post but it's closed. I'm post #95. It was a bit windy the day we shot and I hit just to the right.

Is anyone else still practicing?

I like my target enough that I moved a gong out to where it is. I feel like the 10" circle is perfect for competition but not so much for training.

The grass has grown up on the bullet path so I came up to a very high kneeling position today and put the sticks out front and then hugged the pack and smushed my bino harness between the pack and the buttstock. No hand up front on the sticks.

I had great stability on my elevation but my windage was wobbling about .5 mil.

At 600 yards I'd send it on a moose, maybe an elk, but not a white-tailed.

My target is still hanging in a tree. I stopped and took 3 shots at 813yds. I guessed at a 4mph wind full value. I missed all 3. I checked zero and can't blame that. I forgot my pack so I piled up stuff that was available, including an ammo box and a couple home made sand bags for a front rest. I'll keep trying.

It pisses me off that I can walk up to our long line at our club's flat range, drop my pack and hammer a cold bore shot at 840 yards with my 223...yet whiff with no idea what the issue is in the field.

Then the logic kicks in...wind flags...on a honed concrete slab...at a known range...a big ass target I've looked at 20 times.

Cold Bore Challenge is great to let me know where I'm really at because I'll 100% be using some form of standing supported or seated supported in the saddle or a ladder stand.

I'm getting over my desire for a fast/long range 6mm. I currently can't hit anything consistently at long range under a realistic hunting scenario, as I've proven to myself and Rokslide over the past few cold bore challenges.
