What’s the coolest thing you found in the back country

I was hunting in Montana not too far from Dillon with my cousin and uncle. Went up into this saddle area chasing elk and found and old USFS cross cut saw in the timber. I packed it back to the truck. My cousin thought I was stupid. Then he lost my radio.... who's what? :)

God. No photo available.

When Denys Finch Hatton took Karen Blixen flying, after they landed, one of the Kikuyu who lived on her farm asked her if she saw God up there, she said “No.”

Then he asked Denys if they would get high enough in the plane to see God. Denys said, “really, I do not know.”

Then the Kikuyu said, “then I do not know at all why you go on flying.”

The "coolest" things some of you guys have found in the wild are mylar balloons and headless dolls? Time to get out more. 😉

Or maybe someone needs to start a thread titled "Coolest garbage you found in the Backcountry"

Attached are the numbers. 2006831. Someone help me find this guy.

I posted this on pirate, there's a few really impressive internet sleuths over there. This was one of the responses.

From what I found on wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Servic...s_Marine_Corps)
that service number would be from an enlisted marine from 1966-1972, being 2006831 it's likely to be from 1966.

They stopped using the service numbers in 1972 and switched to SSN's

I would contact the Veterans Affairs office in your county and explain exactly what you are trying to do and see if they can help you in any way.

I know the guy here in my county the VA admin is a real standup dude and although he might not just hand you personal information he'd likely help facilitate contact so hopefully you can get some help that way.

Also from the wiki page that would have him enlisted right in-between all around badass R. Lee Ermey and serial killer Leonard Lake they if that matters lol

Found this old boot up above timberline in SW CO. There's a good story behind it I'm sure.

There's some public land here in Minnesota that used to be where they made munitions during WWII. There are foundations all over the roughly 3500 acre property. This is the coolest/weirdest one I came across. It's not near anything on the very top of a cone shaped hill. It's a tiny little 1 room structure build right into the hill. Not sure if it was used to house dangerous weapons/gunpowder or something of the sort since it's so far away from all the ruins and built into a hill. I can only speculate. I'm sure someone knows. But pretty cool nonetheless. Hill1.png2019-03-22_14-19-58_630-2.jpeg

Is that the area near Rosemount? I spent some time exploring that about 25 years ago. Some cool stuff around there.

Not the back country but found a Bison horn sheath while goat hunting in SD. Also while auodad hunting in Texas we came across steps carved into the rock on a ridge that apparently the original ranch owner had his workers carve in so he could walk it easier? Must have quit mid job because the pick axe and metal wheeled wheel barrel frame was laying on one of the steps.

I have also picked up a bunch of fossils, arrowheads, etc.

Found a 12" pipe wrench while we were quail hunting one afternoon. I put in the game bag on my vest not knowing if we would walk back the same way or not. By the time I got back to the truck I was wishing I had left it where I found it.

I found a splitting wedge, Turkey hunting in north GA a few years back.
Also a complete bison skull in middle TN. I found out later that that day, a guy used to graze a pet bison on this particular patch of land. It died some years ago & he'd wedged the skull in a tree as a memorial. I took it back to put in the tree. As much as I'd have loved to bring it home, it felt wrong.Screenshot_2020-02-29-07-45-03-1-1.png

Thanks so much in will reach out and see what I can find out.

Dang. Found some very cool fossils last Fall but I had location turned on for OnX and I'm pretty sure there is a GPS identifier in the images.

No way would I risk giving up those areas. Lizards heads and full turtle shells. Really cool stuff. We leave it be, but it's really cool to see. Benefits to getting way off the beaten path.

I believe if you screen shot your photo and then load the screen shot you don't have to worry
