I see so many references to an integral pic rail....are the UM Tikka rings already out of style?
Why else would an aftermarket action appeal?

They already do the lighting cuts, nitride etc to factory actions.

So what there just going to produce a factory action with a different name?

Only reason to produce an action imo is to improve it.

No, I just like a pic rail a little better than recoil pins. Can swap scopes to non-tikka rifles a little easier that way too.

Dont like pic rails enough more to be buying and adding to all my tikkas though.

Unknown Munitions chases too many rabbits.

I think it's commendable that they are looking for things people are asking for that aren't currently available. Rokstok and tikka rings are great adders to the community. Vesper and Hammerhead seem to be popular offerings. Mags/bottom metal seems to fill a void people have been asking for (not me personally). I wont be an early adopter of any suppressor offerings and they wouldn't be on top of my list to have a rifle built but it seems commendable to me that they are always looking to fill gaps in the market.

Is there enough appeal there....is it really an improvement....? I don't know the answer....but I get that some prefer a rail vs dovetail and appealing to various markets is the goal.

These razoo rings were THE ANSWER to Tikka scope mounting according to the same R&D guys that will likely be behind this hypothetical action.

I’m just saying. What else would be different then a factory action?

If the only improvement would be the floating bolt head. Then idk what the point of doing more then the bolt would be.

@mt100gr. also don’t mistake the “best” option for a factory action as the best option.
It been stated on the s2h podcast if integral rail is available as an option on your chosen platform that youbare stupid for doing anything else.

I'd rather have more actions, not more bolts. I don't want to be taking barrels on and off actions but swapping bolts between guns is the easiest thing in the world.
This. AND if using dovetail or rail mounted rings and you set up all your receivers the same you can move a scope easily and just rezero (something you'd have to do with a barrel swap anyways) if you are budget limited on that front for your given receivers. Same with stocks.

I wouldn't want to be shuffling constantly whether the above or a switch barrel setup either way.

There are quite a few people that border on the delusional with some of the prices bantered about here.

A bolt with swapable heads is way more expansive and harder to get consistently right for an existing action than a new one-piece bolt.

Do they? Can you name, for clarity so that it can be addressed- what UM has “chased” that has failed that they control? Yes, they have had issues with gun builds this year, right or wrong, they have taken steps to correct it as much as possible. But in actual products that UM has made- what has “failed” due to them chasing too many rabbits?

For a Tikka factory action that does not have a pic rail- the UM rings are the most durable/reliable choice. How does that have anything to do with another action that doesn’t use the 16.5mm dovetail?

Even Tikka wouldn’t use the dovetail today if they brought a product improved version out- reference the Sako S20 with integral pic rail. It is a lengthened T3 action with a 3 lug bolt.

Picatinny is the standard for scope mounting, and the best option currently available. Integral pic rails eliminates one entire potential failure point in a rifle. That there is a legacy system that works, but needed a better option doesn’t change that.

Again:

People: “why won’t companies make good products and try to actually improve the gear available”

Company: “Ok. We will…. Here you go”.

People: “you’re just trying to make money and market to people. My ______ works just fine”

Company: “If what you have is working, keep using it. If you are looking for a new product, this one is improved and better- here’s why and how we know it is”

People: “you guys need to stop trying to solve issues and improve what’s on the market”.

Company: “But you asked for it?”

I'm not sure where guys are finding tikka actions consistently at 5 or $600? Especially stainless. Bolts aren't $300 either. Yes occasionally you might see one.
There was a rebate going most of the year for $75 which when paired with ordering a blued rifle ~$630 or stainless $730 got you quite close to that mark even before potentially selling off the barrel and perhaps the stock (realizing certain barrels and stocks fetch a better price). A few weeks ago there were some solid sales going to pair with that.

Do you need help finding a deal? If so blued or stainless and what bolt face?

Didn’t they have to stop producing the rings, recall them and redesign?

As for Tikka actions versus any other.

My question is why anyone would choose any R700 pattern action over a Tikka action? Unless you are chambering it in cartridges that require a 3.8” COAL, every “custom” action is objectively and demonstrably less reliable and more prone to failure. They aren’t more “true” and they don’t shoot better. The almost all exhibit bolt bind. So “yay” I get “custom” action that isn’t more “accurate”, is less reliable, cycles and functions worse for a bunch more money.

Then, doesn’t mean a Tikka action is the “best”? Or that it can’t be better? No, it does not. It’s means that it’s better than what is currently available. But using a pattern that has a known, and demonstrable flaw (trigger) as the basis for a new action is ridiculous- and exactly what the industry does.

How to improve a Tikka action while still allowing the aftermarket products for Tikka’s to work…

1). Integral picatinny rail.

2). Nitride the action.

Then, one of two options-

1). More reliable, and less susceptible to environmental problems. Enclose the action and seal it as much as possible- less entry point for water, ice, and debris means less chance of failure.

Or-

2). Make it lighter from the start- open it up and reduce weight as much as possible for the 4lb sheep rifle people.

How is either of those things “bad”?

Exactly. Their failure was in not identifying an actual problem and correctly and purposefully testing and vetting it. It was based on honest ignorance of what real vetting should entail. When they learned there was an issue, they gave everyone their money back and immediately stopped producing them. Then, when a new design came out, it went through 8-9 iterations with actual testing to ensure it was correct.

Thats what is supposed to happen.

UM’s issue isn’t in “chasing too many things and getting overwhelmed”. It has been in learning what a proper process for testing and vetting products, and in some cases what proper sequence must be for QC.

I think they are doing a good job at shooting the gap in the market and innovate.

I am definitely behind them vetting products more throughly and challenging others to do the same.

They are definitely putting along more money where there mouths are.

I definitely believe they have integrity and will back any issues found.

They definitely need to just keep everything hush and just release fully vetted products so there isn’t all this internet what ifs.

I’d rather have them just put the money into buying out swfa and getting scopes on the market.

The main reason I would chose to most likely not have them chamber a barrel/rifle build is I just don’t like an employee based builder. I just don’t have faith in the buy in of an employee.

Other then Shaen who doesn’t take work what other owner based people are building Tikkas?

Besides that shit bird Omr
