I actually just cut out soft drinks about 5 days ago. I quit drinking regular Cokes about 17 years ago and switched to diets. But I've been pounding about 7 Coke Zeros a day since they came out. I absolutely LOVE them, so this was a big step for me but doing ok so far. For the last 3 days I've been waking up with a mild headache. Annoying, but not debilitating.
Last year I got serious about my training and dropped a good bit of weight. I also started drinking a lot more water, about 4x Nalgenes a day. I too hate to drink plain water without any flavor, so I've been using Hawaiian Punch singles. They taste great, but my wife has been bugging me to go to something like the Pure brand or crystal light. Anyway, I made the switch off of the Hawaiian Punch at the same time that I dropped the Coke Zeros. These pure packets don't taste nearly as good, which means they must be a whole lot better for me.
I've also cut out my daily K-cup of pre-mixed 70cal French Vanilla Cappuccino, which sucked hard. Replaced with black coffee.
The reason being is that due to some fairly mild injuries/overtraining combined with taking a pretty bad fall on a trail run, I decided to take some time off from running and x-fit to heal up and spend time with family. This was from beginning of Dec through most of January. My diet was not great with all of the holidays and such, but I literally put back on about 15lbs in that short window of time! I've been back at it for a while now and have dropped about a third of that (thank God, I was about to have to go buy bigger pants!) But now I'm making a conscious effort to cut back on sugar/artificial sweeteners. I think this has been my biggest dirt flaw/weakness for the majority of my adult life, and I think all the extra sweeteners that I consumed during that period of time really magnified the weight gain for me. I committed myself to this low(er) sugar diet as a 1 month experiment. Interested to see how I feel and how my weight will be impacted after 30 days, and if I even have a desire to go back to it then.
