What’s Special about a SAUM?

I’d like to keep this thread about the SAUM,s only that utilize headstamped
Brass in 6.5, 7, & 300 SAUM.

I’d like to see Rifle build pics guys are using chambered in SAUM.

Also include some positive information regarding the benefits & Performance you’ve experienced from your SAUM rifles, to help introduce & promote the SAUM to others.

This is to piggy back off of another thread I started recently to help promote continued support of a cartridge that performs really well, & deserves to remain available.

Help Keep the SAUM’s Alive !!

Thank you for your support.

Now share your Great pics & Experience of your favorite SAUM.

I don’t have the rifles anymore and sold off the big pile of Hornady 6.5 GAP brass I was sitting on but I did keep my stash of Rem brass if I want to do it again. I still have the reamer’s for both so I’m good there too. I’ve got a 7mm 9tw Krieger in the bin waiting for something and a big stash of 180 Hybrids :)

7 RSAUM and a 6.5 RSAUM/6.5 GAP

7 SAUM = BEST LOWER 48 BIG GAME CALIBER . . . . change my mind lol

2000 fps / 1500 ft lbs @ 600 yds

Thats what I was looking for. A 7 SAUM with a 168gr Berger gets me there. All in a short action, relatively short barrel, and moderate recoil. Im learning the SAUM basically has a cult following. Im probably considered a member of it at this point. Theres compromises in every direction when it comes to caliber selection. I feel this one has the best balance.

Build
22" Proof 8.4 w/ SRS Chubb Brake
Bighorn Origin SA
Timney HIT (since move to Triggertech)
MDT HNT 26
Mk5/NX8 in Hawkins RIngs
RRS Arca Plate
MDT Ckye Pod Gen2 Single Pull
Anvil
Two Vets No Name V2

Here's my 7mm Saum, work done by Defensive Edge.
Shoots 180 Bergers at a leisurely 2900fps over 59.8gr of H4831sc.
Topped with an ATACR 5-25
(Photos are screenshots because the original images were too large.)

jon beanland converted both 300 saums to 6.5 saum a few years ago

one is short and heavy - perfect blind rifle for my SC farm

the other is 24” and light - great all around rifle

a 120gr TTSX at warp speed wrecks whitetail

Genuine question: why did you guys choose 7 saum over the 7ss or 7sst? With the limited/non-availability of the saum it seems like you may as well go for the sherman cartridges. It actually seems easier to get sherman brass than saum brass for the time being. I’m bouncing around the idea of building one of these cartridges but haven’t really decided. I wish they would’ve put the 7prc in a short action.

You can buy all the 6.5 and 7 Saum ammo you want including custom loads from copper creek. I’ve looked at the Sherman’s and they are really intriguing but I don’t reload and don’t at least some of the Sherman’s require fire forming? Maybe I’m wrong about that

You really wouldn’t be any better off with the Sherman cartridges. One source for brass, dies and reamers. If ADG decided to tell him to pound sand with brass, then what? You aren’t going to find a lot (if any) factory ammo options for the 7SAUM and you darn sure aren’t going to find any for the Sherman cartridges so it’s a reloaded only proposition or pay for custom loaded ammo.

7PRC as-is will not fit in a short action.

My semi custom 7saum, tikka action, x-caliber 26” steel barrel, Mcmillan stock, mark5, 180eldms going about 2890 using n565. Tack driver, very manageable recoil. Love the gun, was one of my fav shooters until I my 260AI just got finished.

Homebrew 7 SAUM
24" Carbon six pre-fit barrel
Savage Axis II action
Oryx LA chassis

I'm tempted to send it to Unknown to have it +P'd with the hope of getting around 2900 out of berger 184 hybrids.

Badass! What’s the length of the barrel in that first pic? Where the saum is stuffed in your pack, can on the end.

That's why I went with the 7ss. Rich is a genuine dude. Are they that much better than a saum? Nah, probly not. But they fit better in a short action (I'm running 180 eldm) and the brass is available.

My post is less about a SAUM, and more about a man, best friend and hero. I lost my Dad a year and a half ago. While I was with him in the hospital I made him a promise. He would always be with me hunting. I wasn't sure at the time how I was going to do this. I decided to build another rifle and put a little of his ashes into it. He loved the other rifles I built, and never let me forget he shot them better.
He was always a fan of the 7RM, and instilled that passion for the cartridge in me. I took it to a whole new level and have a cult following of it...hence Mag_7s. I wanted another 7. I wanted to build a 7saum for quite some time, and for many different reasons. The action I chose is a Defiance AntiX, XM. While talking with awesome folks at Defiance about the build they asked if I wanted to customize the serial number. This made my day! I knew right then and there what it would be, my dad's initials and full birth day. After a year of assembling parts I finally finished it last week.

Here's my 7SAUM. This one's for you dad!
