What season are you planning to hunt?

I agree about the party application issue. It worked out for us since we drew initially, but we have a new guy in our group who would not hunt alone. If he had drawn by himself, he would lose his preference points along with the 20% that comes out of the refund. It would also screw our chances for next year since two of us would have 2 points and he would have 1.

As others have said, it defeats the entire purpose of a party application.

I did. It worked out exactly as I have described.
Once you have a preference point, either via a prior year application or via purchasing one, you must apply the following year or you will lose the tag. A member of my party bought a preference point in 2021 with his application, didn't draw, and then lost his preference point when he didn't apply in 2022. I called FWP and they confirmed the above as well. If that didn't happen to you, you got lucky.

If I were a single applicant with 2 points that didn't draw because someone in a party that did NOT draw got a tag instead, I'd have a serious problem with that. This is under the assumption this scenario had to have happened in some capacity.

but, you would have no way of knowing this ever happened, right?

Could easily know. If there's a single person with 2 points that didn't apply as a party that didn't get drawn then we know this happened. Because we KNOW that people with 2 points in a party that didn't get drawn, got a tag.

Fair, but there are many 2 point holders that dont get tags, so what is the likelihood that it was a party app that caused someone to not get pulled vs they wouldve not gotten pulled anyway just because the quota was filled before their name drawn? for that matter, this happens now in the initial draw, they pull one person in a party and hand out X number of tags to the whole party which in turn forces other single applicants to not draw at all.

How many times does the government have to break the law for it to be a problem? What about private citizens?

Anyone who was part of a party that averaged less than 2 points should not have a tag before anyone or any party that had 2 points. Period. That’s the law.

The only possible recourse the state has to this would be for party applications that did not have matching information amongst party members. There is approved language that says the party will be dismantled prior to the drawing if that’s the case. With all that said, there were multiple reports of perfectly matching party applications that had some members draw and some not, which garnered “too bad” from FWP.

It doesn’t have to be this complicated, Montana.

Anyone else that got a released tag and also checked the box for an e-tag have theirs showing in their app? Mine is not showing anything to download. I called fwp and spoke with a licensing agent, and he said he had not seen this before. He confirmed I put in for the e-tag. I was told he is going to forward it over to the IT department that deals with the drawings, and he would get back to me via email when he has an answer. Buy also if I don't hear anything to call them back in a week. So anyone else have this issue or am I the guinea pig?

I was able to draw a limited entry tag in Montana this year. There are three of us going and two of us put in as a party while my son will have a general tag. Montana changed it this year so if you drew a limited entry tag you can't hunt bulls in any other unit. This will give us the option to at least cross in to the ordering units or go to where we have killed elk before.

If I was applies on a single application with 2 points and did not draw….I would be pissed.

I know of 2 party applications that got broken up that applied with 1 point and the single point holder from each separate party drew.

I do not understand how that state can justify breaking up a party and awarding a tag to the separate individuals while denying single applicants with more points.
A party application should be treated as a single application.

Just don’t make any sense.

Doesnt it state that 25% of the tags will be a random draw for those with 0 points? So in theory someone with 0 points could draw and someone with 2 points couldn't

Yes but that’s not the issue at hand.

The problem is single applicants with 2 points and parties collectively averaging 2 points did not draw tags while other parties averaging less than 2 points but greater than 0 points did have applicants draw. The best I can tell, that is illegal based on Montana’s state code and approved draw plan.

Did this occur in the initial draw or did the parties in question draw returned licenses.

The tags that were released from people that didn’t draw their limited entry tags.

No one, myself included, has been able to find anything in state code or the FWP approved drawing plan that speaks to this. FWP employees have been told “it’s there somewhere” by “higher ups”, but the employees don’t even know where “it” is.
