Can you guys delete my account or kick me off? I can’t figure out how to do it. I don’t think this place is for me. I can’t afford any of the gear that everyone uses here, this doesn’t seem to be the place to discuss ethics or resource management, and I think the guy from round valley is trolling me. One parting note, anybody can read what gets posted here, I’ve come across this website many times in the past decade while searching for reloading data. There are a lot of threads on here that advocate for illegally killing wolves, and I can guarantee the anti hunting crowd is using that when they lobby the politicians. K bye
Like you, I also find it interesting that comments advocating the illegal killing of wolves is permitted on here. I guess it's just a part of the accepted culture here on Rokslide.

Oh Colorado.....this is just the beginning. You ain't seen nothing yet.

The first decade will be movement and decline in your ungulate herds. Soon elk will show up in urban areas in greater numbers. Elk will become considerably less vocal. Herds will not vanish....but the impact is very obvious.
This^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^!!!!!!!!!!

Just wait until the elk get displaced into ag areas that historically had very few elk, then CPW will shoot them and write a check to the farmer in the name of crop damage. A certain number of farmers will realize that letting elk eat their crops and collecting a check is easier than farming, and they get more land owner depredation tags.

I'm not talking out of my neck either, I watch it happen every day in Idaho.

Crazier than putting rancher's rights before public landowners and hunters? Are you okay with how grazing is managed on public lands?
No , I guess I should've just stayed with my original thought of relocating Wolves , reintroducing them at all , is crazy . But , being from out of state , maybe I should just not comment at all , as I clearly don't know the ins and outs of the problem .

On average, Colorado has anywhere from 2.6 - 2.85 million cattle. Some of you are freaking out over 18 being killed by a pack of wolves. Does it suck for the rancher? Maybe, maybe not. They'll be reimbursed by the state without having to actually raise, transport, and butcher them. At any rate, the number killed --even unofficially -- is still drastically lower than what makes it to market.

Some of you also use the killing of dumb farm animals to showcase what wolves do to wild animals such as deer and elk. Do you really see similarities between the two categories? Do you think elk and deer are as easy to slaughter as cattle?

Lastly, some of you that posted comments in favor of poaching wolves or "liked" those comments, I've seen your name in other threads where you portray yourself as ethical hunters. If poaching is unethical by definition, can you explain why it's okay to support the illegal killing of this one species? Or is it just cognitive dissonance?

For the record, I'm not an anti-hunter and I have only lived in the Midwest for 6 years. Before that, I grew up and lived in the PNW, hunted the backcountry more than most of the blowhards on here, and I still hunt out west every 1-2 years. Some people have tried to discredit my previous statements by using my current location. Good try, ladies! Stick to arguing against my statements rather than character assassination.

One last thing, for the record: Just because I don't agree with the wolf hysteria on here or support poaching, doesn't mean that I think wolves should be reintroduced at unsustainable rates or left unchecked. There is a balance that should be attained but the pendulum will swing both ways before it's achieved. You had a wolf-free west for almost a century. Now it's swinging the other way but things are nowhere near as bad as many of you claim....yet.

Wolves are rampant serial murderers, it's been well documented that they frequently kill small herds of elk in their entirety, wipe out the whole herd, kill them just to do it and eat zero meat. On multiple occasions the only viable solution was helicopters and machine guns, paid for by the tax payers.

The incidents that gather the most attention and press are the cattle and sheep, but don't kid yourself into thinking that wolves simply give up killing elk, deer and moose because cattle are slow and dumb.

You do realize you sound like a blowhard when you online chest thump about how you used to backcountry hunt so much…. You are a midwesterner now… you don’t live in Co nor do you ranch, I wouldn’t pretend that it’s okay since there are a lot of cows in the state. A small family ranch that loses 18 head would be devastated.

Anyone remember WHY wolves were shot to hell a long time ago….?

Oh yeah. They were jeopardizing the livelihood of ranchers.

But we all know the livelihood of ranchers and farmers isn’t very important anymore - because everyone knows that all the food comes from the grocery store

Just Some Guy 35,

The majority of the people in favor of wolves do not care about hunting and would just as soon we all give it up. The wolves are not being managed and every time they try to manage them your friends instigate a federal law suit. It’s pretty simple but you do not understand. Your wolves have decimated areas of Shiras moose in the Rocky Mtn West that took 100 years to rebuild. Others with more substantiated information can talk about areas of Rocky Mtn Bighorn sheep that have been hammered by wolves. Without proper control the wolves just keep on killing unchecked.

You guys think wolves were controlled in the past by ranchers and hunters with rifles? That's somewhat true but far from reality. Then, as now, it was incredibly difficult to effectively hunt and kill meaningful numbers of wolves using traditional methods. Along came 1080 and BOOM the wolves and a huge % of the population of coyotes were eliminated from the landscape. Was it the right thing to do? Decide for yourself. What I do know is that wolves will never be "regulated" with traditional means of hunting as long as they're managed as a big game species, it's been proven many times over.

It’s true the majority of them were poisoned, wolves are difficult to trap and even more so to hunt using traditional methods. I’d reckon most that get killed in the managed states by rifles are the I was out hunting something else and happened to see a wolf

Even with almost unregulated hunting and trapping, night hunting, thermal optics ect wolf harvest is very low and numbers are waaaaaaaaay over objective. What's the solution? The 1080 solution was outlawed in the 70's and helicopter machine gunning is frowned upon by the general population of animal lovers and Joe tax payer.

I don't have the answer, but anyone who thinks wolves will be hunted into whatever they consider an acceptable population are sadly mistaken. For every wolf taken by a hunter there's a bitch or two having a litter of puppies two draws over.

1. I didn't conciously intend for it to be a chest thump but perhaps you're right. I'm gonna let my statement stand though because it is statistically true.

2. My geographical location and profession do not make my opinions and statements worthless. Many of you get upset because I don't count anecdotes as evidence. Sorry, I have a passion for science and appreciate the methods scientists use in collecting data. While I enjoy reading about people's observations, I still base my arguments on the evidence provided by professionals.

3. As far as I know, ranches devastated by wolves will be reimbursed by the state. If they aren't reimbursed, then I feel for them. I don't receive any handouts from the state for the impact deer have had on my small farm. I'm only allowed to kill 2 deer a year yet I am plagued by them. Regardless, that's just the way it is when you're a small operation, whether it be livestock or orchards.

Can you please post links to the documented cases you're referring to? I'm not being a dick, I genuinely would like to read the material so that I can see where you're coming from.

And I definitely don't think that wolves are mostly killing farm animals since so few are killed in comparison to how many wolves there are. Of course animals that are raised for profit will be in the headlines more. Big money is what matters to most of the world, not elk populations.

I don't have a link, it's frequently in our local news and occasionally posted on the IDFG site. I also get a lot of intel from local ranchers that never hits the web and can't be verified second hand. It's become frequent enough that most have become numb to it and it's no longer deemed newsworthy.

Look, I try to take what people say serious but it's difficult for me when people lump me into categories that I don't fit into. "Your friends" and "your wolves", is one part of what I'm referring to. I have a somewhat small group of friends and most of them are both intellectuals and wildlife enthusiasts. None of them are involved with wolves in any capacity though. I am not involved with wolves either so why exactly are you saying that?

Also, before I reply to anything you've written, would you mind posting links to these documented cases you've referred to? I would like to see them so I can better understand where you're coming from.

Coexist eh Lenny? Wonder if his views have now changed.

“We’re trying to learn how to coexist with wolves like we’re going to need to, but I was preparing to share a calf or two here and there to feed their pack, be compensated, and do what I can to prevent conflict,” he said. “When they come through and slaughter 18 calves and leave them lie, they’re not holding up their end of the deal with coexistence.”
It always comes down to “compensation”.

Idiots.

Killing the golden goose for a group of activists that never go into the woods.

Stupidity is rampant and we are doomed.

Reread my post. You'll learn I was not serious but expressing frustration. Most of the veterans here didn't need me to say so, but the new guys, and now you, need it spelled out, so I edited it just for you. Guess that's where our Rokslide.com culture has come to.
