My house is old. Horsehair plaster and lathe interior walls, 16" thick stone exterior.

The over penetration equation is a little different than most and I've taken that into account on how the 12ga is loaded.

years ago in New Orleans a neighbor had a break in. He decided to crack off 4-5 rounds through his bedroom door with a 9mm toward the noises he hears in the hall. No hits on the bad guys, who ran off with haste, but 3 of the rounds zip through his place and made it through the neighbors house across the street To punch interior walls. No injuries, but I recall it was a legal mess. Across the street neighbor won both property damages ansd some kind of award for endangerment As I recall.

Sounds like hes lucky not to be in jail for shooting an innocent through a door without seeing his target first.

So, why the snark? I'm not trying to make an enemy here, but you asked and participants (I believe) attempted to appropriately provide their input. You didn't ask for a researched answer. Sorry, but I didn't think when I responded that this thread it was going to be a game of "Gotcha!", which you (as the OP) have made it. And, just so you can provide us with your background in order for others to evaluate your level of expertise in this area, how many shooting investigations have you personally conducted? I'm in the double digits and (unless you surpass that number), maybe you should contemplate pausing before you run your keyboard with condescending language.

Depends on the room but my go to is a short barrel 20 gauge with #2 buck shot.

Agree to a point, but #1 concern is ending the threat to family/wife/kids. 2nd and 3rd order effects are just that.

couple things, first, at no point did I ask for inputs. I simply shared a video of which the topic has frequently been debated. if you want to trust 3 rounds of 20ga birdshot to protect your family, that’s on you, but if you are in fact a cop, I’d wager you have a duty pistol next to your nightstand.

Frangible 5.56 for me, SBRd and suppressed. 30 of them with a spare mag. Intruders often come in multiples. I’m sure your research has shown that to be true. Now add in the confusion and disorientation that comes from an abrupt wake-up from a deep sleep to the house alarm going off or the door being kicked in, now we’re going to shoot a unsurpressed shotgun in the dark and expect to have any night vision or hearing leftover for the two follow-up rounds you have left? Not my gameplan but to each his own.

Haven't read through all of this so if it was already discussed my apologizes but what about a 458 SOCOM in a shorty AR build? Not sure if anyone makes "home defense" ammo for them but you could always roll your own and use some type of expanding bullet to slow down over penetration. I'd imagine one of those things with a bullet that expanded would have some serious knockdown power yet still be manageable to efficiently shoot at close range in a shorty AR build.

I used a 20ga for 3-gun once.

Reloads are problematic unless you have the thumbs of a 12 year old.

It'll either be .380acp, 38 special, .357 Mag or 10mm depending on room I'm in when the isht goes down.

If I'm sleeping and their trying some isht.. 10mm it is.

Effective, but for an entirely different application.
