My instincts tell me a 20ga or even 410 loaded with TSS turkey shells might just be a devastatingly effective home defense combination(s) easy to shoot minimal recoil and TSS is absolutely crushing in what ever it hits especially at ultra close ranges in a home invasion.
MY personal HD gun is a Ruger PC in 9mm using 27 round Glock fun-sticks loaded with 124grn Federal FTX or my 20ga 870 with #4 Turkey loads.

Try shooting any rifle or shotgun inside your house with no hearing protection. Also, long guns are hard to maneuver in tight spots.

Lived in a fairly sketchy party house for a while...

20ga loaded with #6 will cross a small livingroom, and leave about an 1-1/2" hole on the exterior wall of the house.

Lots of stories about that place lol. But I dont remember the noise being as loud as it should have been.

I had a 9mm in the quick access safe on my night stand for a few years.

Now it’s a Beretta Tomcat (7 shots of 22LR) with a full size can on it. I’m not very concerned about needing to use it in the first place, but am certain in the event I needed to it would be effective and not blind or deafen anyone in my family.

Not hunting related, but I’d bet the majority of us have debated the best caliber for home defense…over penetration being the concern.

Just bored browsing YouTube and found this interesting/entertaining. Spoiler alert…5.56 and .22 actually may be the only rounds that won’t end up 4 rooms over.

In my house the best caliber is the closest one to me (or the wife) in a home defense situation.

I’m sure it is but moose are big and I always end up cold camping, all bloody in bear country so I can’t imagine choosing a 223 for those hunts. Maybe a winter moose hunt with snowmobiles.

Why thank you. I come in .17, though that might be giving myself too much credit.

Even so, the point that matters is said at about mark 13:50. That point is not that a 223 is the solution. If someone of my low caliber can get that, there is no excuse.

On Christmas Eve 1990 this home was invade by two very determined burglars. After multiple attempts at entry, the burglars were successful but not without substantial injuries, not a single one from a firearm.

Once inside the home they were met with a barrge of homemade "boobie traps", setup and left by an eight year old, nonetheless. After what seemed like hours of torture to the burglars, they finally defeated all the obstacles and boobie traps.

The focus changed from a B&E to snatch some fine goods from this ritzy home to a mission to get the kid whom almost one up-upped them and embarrassed them with the "goodies" left for them. The kids life was truly at stake at this point.

In the end, an old man (probably in his 70s) with snow shovel to the face and head of the intruders ,along with a very sturdy coat hook, was able to subdue the burglars long enough for the police to arrive and arrest the perps.

I can only assume that since this happened in Illinois just outside of Chicago that no one had a firearm because they're heavily policed and frowned upon as well as probably illegal.

Guns aren't always the only answer for burglars, sometimes a pesky kid with a little gumption can get the job done AND an old man that knows how to use a snow shovel.
