6mm-06. Simple one step process to neck down 25-06 brass which is easy to find.
I think that would be a cool cartridge, but $300 die sets kind of put me off. Not sure I want a true wildcat cartridge either, thought I admit I never buy factory ammo.

Why a regular 1:10 twist for the 25/06 and not a faster twist? If you are planning to rebarrel there isn’t any disadvantage to a faster twist, only upside potential.
The only reason is that I was planning to get barrel from Northland and they don't do a fast twist 25. I really don't think for my situation I need the faster twist for the 25, that caliber seems to be good on pretty much anything inside 500 yards, so I imagine I'd be shooting 110-120 grain bullets anyway.

Got it. I understand.

Listen to this. Why handicap yourself.

You didn't mention 270. You can load it down with 130 grain bullets for less recoil, And if you need your punch back you can hand load 150 grain bullets to 3000 fps with a slow burning powder. That's s supersonic past a thousand yards. It's better than ever with the new powders.
And the cases are very similar right?

The 280 AI is a great choice, but it's almost more snot than a 30-06 because recoil is impacted by the weight of the bullet AND the weight of the powder. I like the cartridge, but it feels to meet one of your criteria.

I don't know much about them but I would guess a 25-06 would be a barrel burner.

Old classic rifle like that begs for a 100 year old hot sexy .270 Winchester. Get a fast twist on the new barrel so you can shoot the new heavier .277 bullets. I’d not give at any further thought. 270 Win is better now than ever.
You're right. A 270 with the right twist and bullet can ballistically meet the 6.5 creedmoor and have quite a bit more punch when it gets there. I'm specifically talking about 150 grain bullets pushing about 3,000 ft per second.

PLEASE don't remage this sweet old girl it will look goofy and bad. It'll cost a little more but a chromoly rebarrel and blue is what it deserves. There have been many awesome cartridges listed, a 25-06 or long freebored 257 roberts would be my top contenders (check your mag box for COAL) for low recoil and great performance. There are plenty of great 257 bullets out there for game of any size and a growing number of LR guys are shooting 25s so there are VLDs worth playing with. At the end of the day it's a huntign rifle and you should think about how far you actually plan on shooting it. A brisk 25 caliber pushing a 120gr is pretty damn flat and wind resistant inside 4-500 yards.

I would do a 280ai in your shoes. I already have one so I'd probably go with a 338-06.

How did that turn out? Do they feed okay from the .30-06 magazine?

Oh it’s awesome. I’m loving it and super happy with how it turned out.
There is no problem with feeding. I set it up with both the standard stock with blind magazine and also the Magpul magazine/magwell and a Stocky’s stock.
