Skiing is definitely not a secret of any kind out west. There are so many ski groups online now the difference between mentioning a place and not makes no difference whatsoever. Long gone are the days of keeping anything to yourself. What are just as bad as the groups are the video podcasts from visitors as well as locals.

Fishing has gone the same way - local hot spots all over the west were over run with Covid slackers and work from home types with nothing better to do than trade info on what rock to fish from, and which lakes to take a crap in - enough crap to change the water quality. My opinion of the average person outdoors has gone down since that whole cluster duck.

Shhhhhhhhhhh!! :)

Rokslide posts have not wrecked a single ski town across the West.

Realtors, developers, and chambers of commerce, on the other hand, have destroyed many. Every once in a while I'll see a realtor's billboard in some major city, usually in the south or southwest, advertising property in MT in a certain area. That's when the town is royally screwed.

And the copper mine, same thing is going to happen in Lewistown when they do the revamp of rocket ranches and build a community for the builders

Tale as old as time, people move to “less populated” spots for peace and quiet, small town vibe, space. Place becomes “quaint” and “charming” others find out, want a piece of that…. Pretty soon the area gets built out and mom and pops get pushed out, gets developed… then over developed. Loses lots the original appeal. Then folks move out to re-find that charm or they can’t afford it. Then rinse and repeat… oh and if you are from one of those places and don’t like your hometown/state getting steam rolled you are some elitest nimby

I saw Wolf Creek mentioned. Being privately owned and managed and unaffiliated with any major ski corporation will keep it far behind most comparable areas unless the family sells out. But that stupid, Texan developer who has been trying to build the “village at wolf creek” for over 3 decades now just nay end up blowing it out. He’s chest deep in 30 years of ongoing legal battles and has his heels dug in. He’s pretty old, though, so maybe he’ll keel over sooner vs later.

What has kept the hordes at bay is the fact that you have to commute to get there.

Is it played to say this looks awesome?
I feel bad for being influenced and hot spotting, but this looks pretty awesome.

Lot of truth in that, wish more folks who moved to Co, were as accepting of my lifestyle as I am of theirs, funny how some show up and want to tell those that have been there how it “should” be, sounds like we would get along, would have you Co… unfortunately what you are looking for has been gone for about 20 years or so
Isn't it hilarious and ironic looking at the history of Colorado (California too)?

States that were founded on the backs of natural resource extraction by tough mountain men and women. All of these mountain passes and trails existed to haul out silver gold, moly, coal, etc. People that lived in dirt huts and survived through brutal winters eating what they could. Then you have all the ranchers and farmers in the mix too.

Then a bunch of liberal city slickers moved west. I guess if you build it, they will come.

Idk if you remember me from ht, but I just spent 5 of the last 24 months slinging chairs and bumming in summit county.
Ski towns... yuck!!!!
I knows summit’s kinda the belly of the beast as far as “ruined” goes, but yeah, it’s a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.
Just too many people.
Shoulder to shoulder in the grocery store 🤢
We call it Disneyland for a reason.

Unfortunately I have to drive down to get groceries in Dillion and that's enough of that town for me.

I get it for sure. Unlike honey holes, the folks crowding all the ski towns are not guys like us though. Not from what Ive seen anyway. They don't load their own rounds and put on a backpack and go live in a wilderness area for a week+ without coming back to the trailhead. I didn't ask this question on reddit. I thought I was in good company here asking this question, given the assumed audience, and actually still believe I am for the most part. I have received more positive responses than snarky ones, and I have also gotten some really helpful PMs.

Fact is I cant move somewhere if land is not for sale in that area. So, unless you want to buy up all the land in your area, you are getting a neighbor one way or the other. Do you want it to be a guy who minds his own business, but is useful and would help you in any way he could, or do you want an urbanite from a population center who doesn't know how to change a tire, doesn't like you shooting, and wants to start up an HOA? Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving
Yeah, there’s not many core guys in skiing.
