I have a Tikka that shoots really really well with a factory load I like. I’d like to cut and suppress it. If done correctly, what’re the odds that it won’t shoot that load as well as it does now? Is the idea that chopping a barrel could ruin accuracy yet another internet farce?

Pretty much. Chop away.

I know it’s a long shot but I’d like to try it out and I can’t get any loaded before my Christmas deer season opens. Could I pay someone to send a box or two of loaded tmk or eldm to me? If so please dm me.

#2 for the AR
187 yards
Caught the bullet under hide. She was quartered a little more than I thought. Ran all of 30 yards.

Care to share load specifics? Twist? Reamer freebore? If you don’t know the FB dimension do you have an OAL touching lands or OAL and jump to lands? Brass? Small or large primer?

Is that a credo 2-10? If so how do you like it??
Yes, Credo 2-10x36.

First time hunting with it. I checked the reticle out without illumination after sunset on a very young doe in heavily wooded area with 8/8 cloud cover. Could’ve shot without illumination on >4x power easily within civil twilight. 2-4x was difficult to discern reticle after 20 minutes after sunset.

It’s a keeper…

Finally… caught up on all the reading on this thread. Learned a lot. Thanks to all who posted with actual knowledge and experience.

I’ve had experience before shooting coyotes with a 223, not favorable with a 16” barrel and 55 vmax but once I put a 20” barrel on had good results. These results led me to not even consider the 223 for big game let alone another bullet option for it. Fast forward to the end of 132 pages of this thread excited to try out some other bullet options. Mainly the 69 TMK or 73 ELD M as I currently have a 1-9 barrel.

Seems like if you stay within the velocity threshold of the bullet and use a bullet with good terminal ballistics they perform.

I watched several YouTube videos with ballistic gel and the would cavity with the TMK or ELD M bullets we’re very similar in size coming out of a 223 or a 308. Very eye opening.

Also I thought the amount of energy the bullet produced at a given range would aid in penetration but this has also been proven wrong.

The attached video I think is very good and he also has a lot of other videos that were very good with ballistics gel.

Thanks for posting that, I’ve now watched almost all his videos on top of reading this entire thread. In one video he pits the 300 Win Mag using a 180gr Core Lokt against the 243 with a 108gr ELDM, that was the one that got my attention the most.

Good stuff, really helps fill in the gaps.

What happens with the core lokt in comparison?
Didn’t open as much, less hydraulic shock, smaller temp cavity & permanent cavity. Wasn’t a super-drastic difference but the smaller cartridge outperformed it. Which I guess is the drastic difference lol. The fact that the 243 would’ve resulted in more damage and a faster kill than the 300 magnum in that instance.

Like the OP said at the beginning, bullets matter more than headstamps.

Here’s the video. Apologies, I was going from memory. He had done the 243 in an earlier video and referred back to it along with several others.
