5 arrows done, so I moved up to 40 yards and just had to shoot that shiny new target.Screenshot_20230503-194749_Gallery.jpg
Thanks Robby, Sam and sponsors and all involved to make this a success.
I enjoy seeing all the target setups and equipment.

Two more shooters before we reach the magic 100 mark.

We will also need a couple alternates. If you still want to shoot, click the Watch button top of page on right (or the flag in TT) and you’ll receive any notifications if there will be more slots open. Some shooters back out or disqualfy, so there could be more opportunity to shoot.

Thanks for everyone who came out for this.

Wow, more than several shooters are done on day five. Wish I was! I hate this challenge!!!!

This is where the scrolling fun begins.

Go check out everyone's posts now.

i didn't calculate it, but to page 4, seems the normal is people (including this one) overestimating their MER.

and its' fun to read the comments (and a few excuses lol)

A couple notables...

page 1, the arrow sticking in the table leg cracked me up @TX_Diver

and page 2, @CM you got a great group going for a 70 MER. Only one arrow to go (no pressure hahahha)

and page 4, @ResearchinStuff had to restart the challenge after a squirrel walked out on the range--who could resist that?

I like the ballons guys are shooting. Great idea!

Can't wait to check out the rest of the entries.

Lump me in with the over estimators this year. I’m 1 out of 4 at 70yds after never missing three years in a row at 60yds. Humbling to say the least. Im post #67. Itching to finish my 5th shot tomorrow so I can check if my zero or tune was off, or confirm I’m just a 60yd max guy

Good luck on that last arrow, and let us know after you check your bow. If it was an issue and you want to, you can restart the challenge. Either way you’re already qualified once you shoot that last arrow,

Sincerely,
your fellow humiliated Rokslider

I ended up at 40%. Hope you finished better!

I had the best conditions of the challenge for my last day and blew it. No pressure! ;)
I’m glad I didn’t see this comment before I just shot. I nailed it man. This last arrow meant the difference between a 40% success or a 60%. I’ll post up the video in a little bit. Thank you.

And good luck to everybody who still has a few arrows to shoot.

This year's cold bow challenge showed me what not having your head in the game can do to a person shooting. It has been a long stressful week at work and my last 3 shooting sessions were all rushed and my mind was elsewhere and it really shows in my shooting. This is a good reminder of why I love bowhunting so much, it's my time to disconnect from the daily grind for several weeks every fall. I defiantly can't wait until things here slow down enough for me to start shooting more. It would be cool to see another cold bow challenge during late summer with the same people and the same MER and see how much of a difference a summer of shooting can make.

I got lucky and had a few days of nearly no wind. Well, seems like that is over. It usually blows pretty hard here, and I seemed to be making up for the calm days by being extra windy yesterday. I’ll see if it settles down before I do my next shot. I’ve had enough bad shots for this years CBC so far!

Same video I posted in the challenge for day 5

Cold Bow Challenge Day 5! Challenge over!

So I finished 3/5 or 60%. Again reminded that shooting pretty much year round is necessary, and that attempting to shoot daily on the hunt is too.

As I showed this year, a new bow (that I believe is more consistent than the bow it replaced) just can’t make up for lack of practice.

Thanks everyone who’s posting up their summary thoughts once thier done. It’s helpful to see what people take away from this.

And @Trumpkin The Dwarf I hate this challenge too and am glad it’s over 😂

Hey Rokslide brother, I don’t wanna split hairs with you but in 7 years, everyone has understood that MER is a fixed distance:
@realunlucky Just to clarify one detail here: MER is fixed, but that also should be your shoot-to distance on steep slopes, correct? Two days I shot up and down a steep slope to mimic mountain hunting conditions. For those my MER 60yd shot per RF (angle adjusted), has an actual arrow flight of 66 yds.

There is nothing in the rules that states we cannot change shooting position each day, just that it must be from the same MER so I think this is legal to qualify, but let me know if I missed something.

Yes changing positions is legal but we need to keep the same MER though out the challenge. This is a personal challenge so dabbling in an undefined area such as line of sight vs angle compensated distance for MER is left to the shooter.

The purpose is to show case how changing daily conditions and lack of practice even over a period as short as 5 days will affect your shooting. This is obviously amplified as the distance grows which is why Maximum Effective Range is specified.

This is a personal reinforcement of our own boundaries but also a learning tool for those perhaps less experienced watching from the side lines to see what changing conditions can do down range to even very good archers. That's why we ask contestants to list the shooting conditions at the time of the shot.

I will double check but it looks like we have 100 shooters. I have one alternate already but ideally need one or two more. Pm me if you'd like to be an alternate

Can't say I'm wild about spine shots... but this was a bit of redemption for the trad bow on day 4. Still maintain that I would never go multiple days between practice sessions with a longbow on a hunt. That's what judo tips and dirt clods are for.

Every year I come in feeling confident..and every year I manage to miss!
3/5 with two pretty bad misses in there. The mental game is the toughest. Still, after all these years, I will occasionally punch that trigger 😪
