Ultimately I believe the gun manufacturers are largely following suit to the ammo manufacturers. Browning is making a fast twist 270 win that allows for extended length in the magazine and faster twist, if the rifle manufacturers start to adopt this concept you will see a resurgence of some of the legacy cartridges. Imagine a long throated 30/06 with extended magazine length, correct twist and a throat in a factory rifle. My hunch is the next craze will be updating legacy cartridges and marketing them as the next best thing.

This doesn’t seem to be a real problem for the 5.56/.223 loads on the market. The longer heavier loads might not shoot great in an old .270, but they wouldn’t be unsafe.

Even for rifles where different loadings are unsafe, there are not that many issues. There are .45-70 loads of at least three different load ranges available on the market - some for the weakest old actions and others for more modern actions.

I'd imagine they modernize the rifles/ chambers first to allow them to shoot the existing ammo and open the door to modern high bc bullets. Would we then see high bc factory loads come to market after while once there is a platform for the loads? Just thinking out loud here.

The fact some wouldn’t shoot great I don’t think would be an issue but I’d be more concerned with the loads not chambering or fitting in the mag box. I would imagine that would be a nightmare for ammo companies to deal with all the phone calls and customer service issues that would come with it.

So with standard bullets with BC's of over .500 available and muzzle speeds being close to 2900 fps with these bullets I fail to see where there is a problem with the 1-10 twist rifles. That twist stabilizes the 150 gr. Ballistic Tip which has a BC of .496. This provides a pretty darned good level of performance way out there. If you can't take care of the vast majority of shooting problems with these ballistics it's not a twist issue.

This year I was wanting to switch to monos as I think the writing is on the wall for lead, and I wanted to just eliminate thinking about it. All these years I've been shooting the 270 and it turns out to be a great monometal cartridge. Drives 129 LRX at about 3100 fps. It sends 110TTSX at almost 3400fps. My 30-06 drives 130TTSX at 3100 as well. The larger cases and powder capacity are not a negative if you want speed to make monos work well at longer ranges.

I have tried the 6.5CM as well with 120gr Sako Blade that is doing a respectable almost 2900fps, but the 270 LRX carries the speed further with less drift.

I think if monos become more and more required for hunting that these older cartridges could see a resurgence.

The issue is your average Joe, 10 rounds a year, bubbah. Bubbahs going to buy these new ammo/projectile offerings and be upset when it doesn’t work in grand pappies old deer rifle. They are then going to trash who ever made the ammo because they don’t know what they don’t know.

It’s one of the most bizarre hunting stories ever. How anyone can have that many issues, accidents ,incidents, problems and dilemmas on a hunt is beyond belief. As you stated it was you first big game hunt. Readers need to research this “Thanks Montana” story of yours and then let’s chat about credibility.
By the way that hunt was in 2013, your first big game animal. So you are telling us in the next 12 years you killed an additional 200 big game animals ? Why can we only find one pic of you on the internet of you and some small raghorn 3x4 bull? I know many active and diligent hunters , none of them kill 20 animals a year or 200 animals in 10 years. Please share some photos with us .

Yes, I do hunt with traditional archery. My passion is mule/horse back mountain hunting primarily with a rifle. Have you read Form’s MT elk hunting drama that he composed over on the Campfire?

While its true the 270 is not part of the "tactical" marketing fad, it is still a very popular cartridge.

Its a very versatile cartridge, and with the addition of higher BC bullets added to the market in the last few years, it's added long range shooting to its resume.

Counterpoint, Backfire did a YT survey recently (so take it how you want) of "favorite hunting cartridge" and according to BF viewers, 270 was the most popular with 20% of respondents saying its their favorite.

Its been getting it done for 100 years and with modern bullets and powder, its doing more and better than ever.

It will probably "die" commercially someday, but not in my lifetime. Probably not in my son's lifetime.

The .270 can't shoot any of the "modern" bullets unless its a custom. The ammo for a .270 hasn't changed. Basically all offerings are the 130-150gn class for a rifle with a 1 in 10 twist. Bullets have improved over time, but when we speak of modern bullets, generally it means high BC, heavy for caliber.

Yup and if needed/ wanted it's easy enough to swap to a fast twist barrel on most rifles.
