Tikka Bump Test

Hey all,

After installing an Unknown Trigger Spring I discovered that on bump test the tikka will fire. I removed the Unknown Spring and reinstalled the factory spring. With the trigger spring screw backed out the Tikka will fire with a bump test.
This seems like a major safety issue. Wondering if anyone else has bump tested their Tikkas. With my Remington 700 and Defiance Anti and a nice light trigger pull (I don’t have a trigger gauge for pounds) those rifles won’t fire with a bump test.

I always test my triggers by dropping the butt of the gun onto a hard floor from about 2 feet up. Just for the heck of it I just smacked the crap out of my Tikka (KRG Midas trigger) with a rubber hammer and it was fine.
 
Factory spec torque on that little son-of-a-beachball is 133 in-lbs. Crank on it until it feels like it's gonna break, then maybe a little more. Def use some type of thread locker and witness marks.

Form's pink nail polish is great! Jokes aside that's a cool trick especially if you have several daughters.
 
Since you went to the trouble of creating a video on it--it's kind of a lame clickbait title for a problem that is user-caused. You didnt tighten the trigger enough when you messed with the spring, tighten it and it'll be fine, arguably better than your 700 in more than one way.

But the problem was caused by you. Tighten the trigger group, repeat the test and then delete the video when it doesnt happen.

R700s are litterally famous for having a flawed trigger design. I wont own one because of it.

Rerun your test with a properly torqued assembly bolt. Also test it in the stock with one or two hard strikes (which matter more as safety should be on most of the time).

I can beat on mine with a 24 oz rubber mallet without it dropping the firing pin with safety off. Multiple 4+ foot drops onto concret butt first will cause the firing pin to drop if the safety is off.

SAAMI drop test standard specifies "safe carrying condition" which would be safety on for a Tikka (the condition in which it is designed to be safely carried). NATO/Mil-STD also specify safety on. SAAMI is a 4 foot drop. Mil is a 4.9 foot drop on concret.

I had to double check as I actually though safety off was specified for some reason.



Good reminder of why safeties should be used if the firearm is not designed for "safe carry" without one.

All I could find was forum posts and they range from 55 in/lb to 133!

To be fair, I’m taking some liberties. The Tikka T3X manual says “return to manufacturer” if the safety needs to be removed, the Sako 90 manual says the same, but the Sako TRG manual list it as 15 Nm (133 in-lb). So I’m reading between the lines a bit, but nothing good happens when that bolt comes loose. That thing should have holes for safety wire.

They are over 90 inch pounds from the factory. But, as has already been stated, Tikka doesn't provide a spec. They do use a property class 12.9 fastener though, indicating the expect it to be pretty tight.

That's my additional readings between the lines.
