My 10 year old son drew a Nov. cow tag. I have had several recommendations for this caliber. I am leaning towards the savage axis. Any other recommendations? I do have an old lightweight 300 savage that my dad gave me, but don't know if this would be light a bullet for elk

7mm-08 in a quality rifle. In a Savage get the models 10 or 16 not the Axis. The SPS Remington is fine although I have had a terrible Remington. I have had several Savages and they all shot great. I don't think you can do better than the 7-08 for most game at reasonable distance.

Marlin XS7s are great little guns. I have one in 243 and it shoots the lights out for a $300 rifle.

Savage makes the model 11 in a youth package with a Nikon scope in 7mm-08. Walmart may carry it in their special order book they keep behind the counter. If so , they would be a reliable low price option. Any rifle and scope combo you get together the first thing I would do is take the scope and mounts off and remount them so you know everything is tight. Every combo I have ever seen had loose bases from the factory. All of them.

Second on the Remington 700. Great for the kids and if you attach the spacers to the stock it makes it big enough for adults.

Howa makes a youth model that comes with an adult stock so you can switch it out when you need. The other thought would be to buy a model 700 or savage and build him a simi custom or custom rifle with the action when he grows out of it. He would have it for life along with all the memories.

Just bought my 9year old the Savage in 7mm08 came with Nikon BDC scope. Bought some of the rem reduced recoil loads and he was shooting .75 groups at 50 yards the first day out. The accutrigger is great for kids.

My son started his big game career with a Tikka T3 in 7-08.He was 11 when he got the rifle and killed his first deer at 12(calif)
He did all his own research and came up with the caliber and rifle he wanted,,,I think he did good.

Digger, for the marginally higher cost, the tikka blows away the savage, remington and the rest of them. You've got a pretty smart kid there.

While I agree the Tikka is the best rifle of the ones mentioned, double the price isn't marginal IMO. :D

When I was looking last year the remington, synthetic stock, blued barrel was $600+, the weatherby vanguard (all guns I compared were blued barrel, synthetic stock) was $570, the savage was very similar, and the tikka was $740. These were all the best prices that I could find in Alberta and BC. The tikka is definitely a price bracket above, and so it's not really comparing apples to apples, but worth the difference. Gun pricing in the states must be a little different than up here if it's double the rest.

The Savage with the Nikon BDC scope is $529 on gunbroker and I would bet about the same or less at Sportsmans Warehouse or Big 5. The Marlin is a fine rifle by all accounts but doesn't have the aftermarket parts support the Savage or the Remington has. I bet the Savage package can be had for less than $500 with a deal code. I don't know if the Marlin or the Tikka come in a shorter youth stock .

All very true Shrek, good points!

Tikka I believe doesn't come with a youth stock option...but I know Marlin does.

Too bad the vanguard doesn't come in a left-handed option.
