Back before stainless was even a thing, we simply used electrician tape over the muzzle and went hunting and didn’t worry about it until you return. Of course if it rained you’ll want to take the receiver/barrel out of the stock when you get home to dry out wipe down with oil. Using paste wax on the metal holds up better, but it doesn’t matter usually.

Back then I sent my main gun off and had it plated with industrial hard chrome - it looks like stainless. Today there are more finishes to choose from, but if you like stainless hard chrome is nice.

When I’d get OCD about something gun related, an older hunting buddy of would suggest I wear out the one I have, then change it. You could hunt a long long time before moisture would cause enough pitting in a blued barrel to impact group size.

No issues with it, I don’t know exact round count but I’d venture a guess of 250-350.
Seems like I need to hit a post count then wait 24hrs to start PM’ing. So it may be a day or two before you get that message but I definitely want that barrel, I’m not flaking on you haha

I have went down this road before since my wife is a lefty. She started out with a savage 7-08 and then upgraded to a Tikka 308 which we rebarreled to 7-08. Its a sweet setup. The savage hardly gets shot because the Tikka is so much smoother. Both are pretty accurate though.

Nice! And yeah it’s hard for us lefties out here. Glad to hear she likes it, I’ve heard nothing but great things about the cartridge.

Now I just need to figure out what chambering to purchase in to replace the barrel with. Like I said previously, might as well get one that I am also curious about. Don’t have any other short actions so time to figure out what else is interesting in that space.

Most rifles were blued not that long ago. I’d buy a blued tikka over a golden savage and wipe it dry once in a while.

I’m a lefty as well, and also love my 7/08, which is a Forbes rifle so that’s of no help because you will never find one, but I will say this though, Christensen Arms makes a few lefty 7/08 options, I know the history of QC problems with CA, I’m not here to debate that, I bought one for my son, a Mesa in 7/08 that is an absolute hammer, your experience may differ, but that was mine with one Mesa rifle.

Ugh I know, and I really like their options at face value but I just cant get past the QC stories I have heard about them and would hate to have to deal with that nonsense at the proud price they charge for their firearms. If I KNEW I could get one without issue then I'd probably go that route but, and it may just be internet bias, there are too many negative experiences floating around out there for me to want to roll the dice...

This barrel would be a quick sell if you wanted to recoup some money.
So, having never entertained this idea before, do you know if the 7-08 would be as easy as a straight barrel swap or are their any other components that need to be swapped if I went with this rifle? I know Tikka uses the same length action with different stops but do they all have the same bolt face diameter, etc.?

I don’t blame you one bit! This was for my son who still had 3 years before he could hunt or use it so I had plenty of time to deal
with any nonsense if needed, as is, there was none and that rifle shoots like some of my $6k customs, no joke, it could have been a fluke, I don’t know or care.

I don’t want to sound like a smart a**, but why not just buy the tikka ss lite in the 6.5 creedmoor, both cartridges pitch similar bullets at similar velocities. If you don’t like the stainless creedmoor, swap it for the 7mm-08 take off.im a lefty as well so i know the struggles. But I would be more than happy settling for a tikka stainless chambered in 6.5 creedmoor vs a savage anything chambered in 7mm-08.

Front range? I got the tools to swap barrels is why I was asking.

Tikka's come in three different bolt faces depending on the caliber. A 7-08 shares the same face with the 243, 22-250, 6 creed, 260rem, 270win, 308, 30-06, etc. (just naming tikka calibers off hand that I'm aware of with a standard face).
