I Work for Ups at the customer counter. FYI all ups stores are franchises and are a poor representation for UPS as they are not ups employees.
Pirate ship or ship station is a great tool for casual shippers, get dimensions and weight right !

I bought some scope rings from a member here and agreed to pay shipping. Those brown clowns charged $28. I sold some scope rings recently and shipped them USPS w/ $100 insurance for $7 or $8.

For smallish items that are not classified as hazardous, USPS is pretty tough to beat. Pirate Ship offers similar rates to business accounts that ship frequently.

What's good about Pirate Ship is it offers options on one page rather than going to multiple separate providers to compare.

If it's for warranty work, I can't understand why Leupold won't send a pre-paid label. If you call them and explain the problem and they tell you it is a warranty issue, they should issue a return label. That would go a long way for quality customer service, and the customer won't get hosed for shipping the defective item back to them..

First, Pirateship is the way to go.

Second, I wouldn't bother with the insurance. Trying to get them to pay out is a giant pain. I just went through it last month for a 100 dollar item. I just gave up and cut my loses. I doubt they are going to be more accommodating the more they owe.
Yep. Even if it’s expertly packed they will do everything to find a way to blame it on the packing job and deny the claim… this is after dragging out their investigation for months, of course.

Why is Leupold making you ship their product back for warranty work? They should have UPS pick it up at your door. It would cost them $17.00ish dollars. I used to work for an Optic company and never once did we make someone pay for shipping on a legit warranty claim.

Ouch. If it were me, I would consider selling it and buying a Rokslide drop test approved scope. I actually did that before my original scope failed just to be safe.

As a side note, if your mk4 hd failed I’d (and I assume others) would be interested in hearing what went wrong with it.

Without clogging up or muddying your current thread, it might be good to post your results on this thread (or a different one if it’s a different model)

Will do. Hoping they can fix the issue and give me some assurance that it will be a good scope from now on.

So you got charged $86 just to ship it? How?

How is a good question.

The Shipment Receipt has on it: Ground Commercial $69.79, Service Options $42.20 (assume insurance) CMS Processing fee $6.22 = $112.21.

The CCard receipt has $112.21 + $17.43 for the box, several small credits then a total of $124.07.

Thanks so very much for the replies. Going to have to check out this Pirate Ship.
I’m new to the Pirate Ship thing and started an account to ship a bow just last week. Wow was it easy and saved me at least 30 bucks. I just printed on to regular paper, taped it on and dropped it off. Like someone above said, you’ll wish you’d done it sooner.

Yesterday I used a UPS Store to ship a Mark 4HD back to Leopold for warranty. Had bought their $19 box and packing from the same store the day before. When I took the package back to the UPS Store and requested insurance in the amount of $1500.00, the clerk made it clear if they didn’t package the product, an insurance claim would likely be denied, since my boxing it up with their box and packing probably wouldn’t pass their test. I appreciated her honesty.

So, I paid the stupid tax and will have a better strategy next time. $124.07 (including $37.50 insurance) to ship a 2 or so pound item seems excessive. Any shipping recommendations for the future will be appreciated. TIA.
My brother, why in the world did you not walk out the door with that kind of highway robbery? People accepting that kind of BS is what keeps these mfers in business. They're a terrible franchise, give gun owners all sorts of trouble trying to legally ship firearms and ammo and whatever just because they don't like it, and they prey upon people (usually elderly) for shipping things because they just don't know better. I go there for Amazon returns because there's one right by my house and I've actually intervened a few times. One time a lady in a walker, had to be pushing 90 years old was trying to ship cookies for her grandkids for Christmas presents, there was something like 10 different small boxes and she was going upwards of $200+. I was trying to convince her to back out and I'd show her how to do it better but she was confused and another guy in line offered to just pay it for her so she went through with it. That dude let the staff have it, but it's not their fault it's the franchise itself that's the problem.

Anyhow, I've used PirateShip.com 7 times in the last week and it's smooth as butter and dirt cheap the entire time. They present you with rates for both UPS and USPS and various options and speeds. Around here you can drop off UPS packages at CVS and there's no line unlike the "UPS store" and USPS will pick it up from your house for free during regular mail route so you don't even have to leave the house when you ship USPS.

I've never used Pirate Ship, but I have had good results with Shippo (goshippo.com). On the surface, Shippo looks to offer similar services to Pirate Ship.

Don’t think there was a great of honesty in her comment. This sounds more like the handle of the bag won’t fit in the little box so you have to pay for extra baggage, or you have to let us change the oil or it voids the warranty. When you receive your scope back in a cardboard box that’s barely bigger than the scope box you’ll be mighty pissed.

I would not have paid it. That’s an almighty rip off that deserves a calL to the manager.

Did she send you a pic of your item all wrapped up?

Not trying to derail the thread and make this pirate ship centric. I had an issue one time with pirate ship where I repackaged a USPS flat rate box, entered the weight and dimensions, and then shipped via USPS. A day or two later, the box comes back to me because I didn’t the buy the correct postage because flat rate boxes are “priority mail”. So if you’re like me, and recycle boxes, keep this in mind when using pirate ship.
