Yesterday I used a UPS Store to ship a Mark 4HD back to Leopold for warranty. Had bought their $19 box and packing from the same store the day before. When I took the package back to the UPS Store and requested insurance in the amount of $1500.00, the clerk made it clear if they didn’t package the product, an insurance claim would likely be denied, since my boxing it up with their box and packing probably wouldn’t pass their test. I appreciated her honesty.

So, I paid the stupid tax and will have a better strategy next time. $124.07 (including $37.50 insurance) to ship a 2 or so pound item seems excessive. Any shipping recommendations for the future will be appreciated. TIA.

US Postal. Registered mail if you’re really worried about it.

I agree with others, USPS. Another alternative is if you know someone who has a business that ships product. They will have a Frdex/UPS account and it’s amazing how much cheaper they can ship stuff for.

As a side note, if your mk4 hd failed I’d (and I assume others) would be interested in hearing what went wrong with it.

Without clogging up or muddying your current thread, it might be good to post your results on this thread (or a different one if it’s a different model)

Sorry to hear you got hosed. Same thing happened to me while shipping a stock once. Pirate ship from now on!

First, Pirateship is the way to go.

Second, I wouldn't bother with the insurance. Trying to get them to pay out is a giant pain. I just went through it last month for a 100 dollar item. I just gave up and cut my loses. I doubt they are going to be more accommodating the more they owe.

1'st rule when buying Leupold is to keep the box.
Put it in a box, walk it into the ups store, and ship it. I shipped several scopes last year, maybe $25 to ship.

Pirate Ship and use their 3rd party insurance to skip the inevitable claim fight with the major carriers if something goes wrong or missing.
I dont know if I did that wrong but when I filed a claim with them, they told me that lost packages werent covered. FYI.

The whole business plan of those places is to take huge advantage of people who don't want to take the time to package and ship themselves. I took a pair of Nikes in that needed returned, forgot to print my own label so I stopped in and they wanted $40, I laughed, drove home and printed my own label for $12 and shipped with the exact same service.
A scope should have cost about $25 insured, if you have a Paypal account you can ship using Paypal ship station also or just create a USPS account yourself. Most any store will give you free cardboard boxes.
