So I was talking to my wife and the topic of why do you need so many guns came up. I danced around the subject as well as any gun owner does but the thought crossed my mind.

In all reality a person only needs 4.
1. 30-06 from any manufacture in the $7-800 range (Tikka, Bergara, Remington before chapter 11, Winchester etc)
2. 12GA any reliable manufacture
3 .22lr Ruger 10-22.
4. 9mm (Glock 19 or maybe a Sig 320 carry)

Argue for or against and feel free to flame on.

Yep, the 30-06 and 10-22 are essential but one shotgun is good, four is better. 2 -9mm (or 40 cal), one for the wife. Large bore revolver for bears. An AR or two. That's a good starter set.

I agree with it somewhat. Change a caliber or two I'm good. 7mm mag , 40 cal for me

Need?

A midsized centerfire rifle
Shotgun

Those two will keep a family alive and well fed.

Maybe a 22/AR type/handgun for whatever.

But all I need to drink is water. Yet here I am with a 10 year old single barrel bourbon in a cut crystal glass.
I need water. But a 15 year old single barrel scotch drastically improves life and so does that new custom 7-08ai in the safe and the new .300 blk and the suppressors and the AR and well I still have a .30-06 and water

I will echo what some of the others are noting that you need an AR, but in addition to that you should also own an M1 garand. Every gun owner should have at least one “Rifle that saved the world” (ping) !

@GreenOne - Blink twice if you’re being held hostage and were forced to post this.

No blinks necessary this conversation stemmed from another safe being ordered. Just a Sunday night thought that crossed my mind.
Figured we could all get in on the thought experiment.

In general agree... But who wants to live with just the essentials in life. I'm not a gun collector and anything I own has a purpose... That said, I have a lot of different needs where a specific gun or caliber is necessary... At least in the logic I explain to my wife 😂.

30-06, 7mm-08, 243, 50 cal, 2 black guns, 3 different shotguns, several pistols in different "necessary" calibers, a couple 22s for practice, and a few others that will remain unlisted. All pretty damn necessary to me!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA 4 or 5 guns. And I suppose you think we only need one box of shells for each gun also, right?

Close.
For hunting,
-7mm to 30 cal of some flavor. Mine is 30-06
-Shotgun if one hunts birds (I do not)
-A 22 (mag or LR), mine is a Christensen Arms Ranger 22 (could be replaced by a 12 ga)
-In AK, a big bore handgun, 454 Ruger Toklat for me
-Black powder rifle of some sort if you muzzle loader hunt
-A strong case could be made for a rifle in 375 if one wants to hunt Africa

For two legged problems
-A semi auto handgun in 9mm, 40 cal, or 45 cal. Some would argue a 10mm can cover this and the big bore wheel gun.
-A defensive long gun, AR or similar. Could be a 12 ga in an urban setting.

If one wanted to be very bare bones, a big bore revolver and a 22 rifle can cover everything.
