I know this is a bit old but I’m dealing with the same thing now on a 300 wsm I’m putting together. Has anyone tried the hell’s canyon la option yet? Also how bad is the mountain tactical LA with the wsm cases?

Just got 2 mtn tac LA 3rd mags for my LA Tikka in 300wsm. No feeding issues. I didn't have any feeding issues on new 300wsm brass in factory mags but after 1x firing they dragged on the insides so I switched.

Great. Those go right into a stock t3 without any bottom metal modification and hold 3 wsm rounds?

Yep. Mine click in a bit firmer than factory but the front pops out on probably half inch when the mag release is hit. It holds 3 wsm rounds and I can click mine in on a closed bolt. Factory bottom "metal" in a rough tech stock

😂 I don’t know what to call it, Bottom plastic? This is off topic a little but I don’t have my 300wsm barrel yet. Plan to use a factory one for now soon as I find a new take off. With the factory 300 wsm how much freebore do they have? I’m reading it’s more than saami which is what I have found in my other tikkas. What would the coal be in with a 200 or 205 loaded near the lands? Thanks

Shim the front and rear of your bottom metal until it doesn’t click in harder than factory

Not sure. Mine is a long throated wsm from PVA. I shoot 180ABs about 3 OAL to lands.

I’ll have to measure my Berger 205 EHs but they were longer than factory mag would handle.

That’s helpful. I’ve had my 270 wsm since 07. I’m bored of the projectile selection so I plan to get a factory 300 barrel, cut it down to 20 or 22” and add a brake. If I like the setup I’ll get a pac-nor barrel made. Just trying to figure out the details now

I love my 20" 300 WSM. I'm shooting the 175 LRX over H4350 at 3005 fps.

Here is a pic of the 175 LRX loaded to 3.085 in the HCA Mag.

I used a few boxes of Norma 180 Bondstrikes to break in the barrel and fire form brass. Those averaged 2905. Velocity is listed at 3084 on the box.

Sweet! What length did you go with and yhow much velocity did you loose? I have two tikkas. It’s been hard to decide what cartridge to go with but I’m getting hooked on the 300 wsm. Seems super efficient. Way off topic now🤣
I cut to just under 22" and lost somewhere around 30 fps, cutting down from the 24.3", as indicated using 205 Elite Hunters and 6.5 Staball. I am getting 3120 fps with 175 LRX using Staball 6.5 and 2867 fps with Berger 205 Elite Hunters using Staball 6.5... but the 205 Elite Hunter load is pretty hot. Still haven't had time to measure COAL but definitely need the HCA magazine for the 205 EH load.

Would someone explain to me what the issue is with using 300WM long action magazines for the 300WSM? Is it the 300WM taper?

the feed lips on the WSM and long action mags are different
more specifically, the feed lips on the WSM mag are longer than the long action mags... therefore, WSM rounds would not be contained by a long action magazine to the extent necessary for reliable feeding.

Thanks for the great color. My instinct to bankroll a light plastic long action 300 WSM / 6.5 PRC magazine for the Tikka stock bottom plastic is strong.

If there's really no solution (Like the Hells Canyon), lmk and I'll start looking around for folks to build.

I think the HCA magazines are a very good solution for enabling longer COAL in a Tikka 300 WSM. They recently released their Gen2 model that addresses a few opportunities present with the Gen1 version... https://www.hellscanyonarmory.com/tikka-t3x-t3-billet-magazines

I've not tried the Gen2 but have every reason to believe it is a great solution. What would be great is Tikka getting off their rear-end and:
1) change barrel twist rate to 1:10 or 1:9.5
2) ship WSMs with the long action bolt stop
3) change the design of their magazine to utilize the full COAL possible, which will be something around 3.1
