Just noticed that this is an old thread. Oh, well, my advice still stands, so I'll keep my reply here rather than deleting it:
Judging by the used bike market, you could buy a new-ish CRF300L and ride it for 4 months over the winter to try it. Keep it if it works for you, sell it at minimal loss (if any) when demand peak in late spring.
Small cost for a 4 month "rental/trial" period.
I had two Ducatis when I was younger, a Desmo-head 900 Darmah and a springer-head 860. Service intervals on the Desmo compared to newer bikes was a PITA, but boy she was sexy..! Raced 125 class MX for a couple years and that also was a learning experience RE service of a high-perf 2-stroker run hard.
