For the range it is needed I think, but I don't use mine hunting.

I keep one on my Scythe when sheep hunting, just to keep from damaging it in rocky terrain. My barrel always seems to get bumped on rocks.

I use a full rifle cover and the can slips inside. Protects it all

Is a suppressor cover essential for a hunting rifle? I am still waiting on my Scythe, so I haven’t tried it yet. I am not interested in being tactical or camouflaged. I just want to know if I am going to need a cover for a suppressor if I rarely expect to fire more than a few 5-shot groups to confirm zero and then use it for hunting.

My buddy didn't think he needed one on his Scythe because he built a hunting rifle and wouldn't be shooting it that much (first time suppressor user). With the Scythe being a tubeless design, it heats up VERY quickly and mirage becomes very bad very quickly. He found out it was a huge pain in the butt to get anything done at the range because he spent 90% of the time getting the can to cool off. The good news is being a tubeless design it cools down much quicker than my traditional tubed titanium suppressor. With a mirage cover is doesn't get pretty bad until after 3-5rnds of 7PRC in a 22" Proof CF barrel on a 90degree day. It was certainly a case of shooting 3 rnd group then switching rifles.

For a commerical cover I got a can chaps I like, has a silicone type material on the inside and 3 straps, vs a bunch of cord wrapped around it.

For my can in jail currently I'm going to try the carbon felt welding blanket route folks have discussed.

I just ordered one of these for my Scythe's. At $26 I'm willing to give them a try. You cut them to size so I'm hoping to get two out of one. I have burn proof gear and Armageddon gear covers as well both are very nice.

I haven't used a commercial cover, but I've very much enjoyed the single wrap of 6mm carbon felt covered with a wrap of coban. I can get through quite a few rounds pretty quickly.... Probably only need to let it cool after 7-8 shots of a 243 at 75F

Wanted to add my personal review to this thread. Just shot my Scythe with the brake endcap on my 18" 6CM for the first time yesterday. ~0.3mil POA shift, groups unaffected. Sound reduction was hard to assess because I was at a busy range and had ear pro on the whole time, but it was obviously much quieter than every gun around me and had no cracks or pops I could discern - more of a smooth whoosh or hiss sound.

The effect on recoil is amazing, it slows everything down and reduces the magnitude all together. I can actively track the target through the scope throughout the whole shot process. Before, even with a low recoiling 6CM, the sharp kick meant that there was a jolt and the target jumped from one place in the sight picture to another. Yes it stayed in the picture but I was not able to watch it the entire time. Now I can. It could also be the case that due to reduced concussion I am keeping my eye open through the whole shot more easily, rather than subconsciously blinking in reaction to the concussion. Either way, it's a really noticeable difference.

I plan to chop and thread all my rifles now, and another can might find it's way into my life before too long.

The down shift in my experience is pretty common in all suppressors I’ve shot. Just the effect of hanging a 1/2lb+ object off the end of a 2’ stick. It’s repeatable which is most important.

Getting a factory brake off my LWRC took boiling in a pot 4 times and a 24 hr soak and still needed a action wrench and a 2' cheater bar to get the damn thing off.

Sheesh, I just put a couple of dabs on my suppressor this weekend… and I’m regretting it after seeing this. I believe I put 2 small spots on each threaded connection.

The stuff I got was gelatinous, so I probably applied more than I would have if I used blue loctite. Who knows how much of that rocksett smeared into the threads as a result.

Got mine out for the first time last weekend; lovely can in so many ways.

I was shocked how quickly I got mirage off it though - I know Titanium is susceptible to this but it cools equally quickly.

On a 22" 7PRC, I had mirage in 2 rounds.

I bought a few of these about a month ago so not alot of experience with them but seem to be the best I've seen for hunting type rifle. They do not insulate as well as traditional "fabric" type cover but I prefer the quiet, low profile "grippy" feel. They are ribbed on the inside so it makes me wonder if water would wick into the gap changing weight/poi. A tight wrap of high temp tape at either end might seal the ends off semi water tight.

Anyone have experience on a loose can’s and effect on POI? Was chasing some rounds at 200 with my 7-08 Kimber hunter with the scythe. Was shooting good prior. Thought it was likely just me losing focus and didn’t think to check the can but it was maybe 3/4 turn loose - didn’t realize it until I was packing everything up. Was thinking maybe that was it - I was hitting significantly lower than I expected.

I just removed 3 muzzle devices that I used Rocksett on. I soaked them in boiling water for 15 minutes. All 3 took moderate force with a large crescent wrench but came off well without issue and look good as new. I am a huge fan of Rocksett so far!

I've only had my can loosen a few times but when it has, it's made an immediately apparent difference in impacts. 3/4 turn is plenty loose to mess up your accuracy. I try to check mine after every group, but I definitely check it after the first bullet impact that doesn't make sense.

Yes
A loose can on the barrel or a loose can component such as can brake will almost always change POI.

Checked it again today and yep the loose can was definitely it. All shot good out to 365 in multiple positions. Definitely something I need to do better at checking and admittedly a relief because it’s easy to fix
