Revolvers

I picked up a scandium 44 mag last year. That thing is a joy to tote around the mountains, but man is it brutal to shoot with magnum loads. 44 specials are fun though.

Sweet setup. Handgun hunting is a ton of fun and gets around the weapon restriction zones up here in MT.

Any idea how the Ultradots do with an astigmatism?

If yours is anything like mine, you will get a "double dot". It is giant PITA right now for me because with my glasses on everything past 5 yards is very blurry, but without them then any dots (including my bow sights) are doubled up and I have to figure out which one is the "real" dot.

Farsighted or reading glasses?

Anything green is the worst offender for me. The Holosun with the chevron actually looks pretty good with my eyes.

For years I packed a Taurus Ti Tracker in 45acp.
Good little package, lightweight, limited to 5 rds.
Replaced it with the SW 386 Hunter...6" barrel, good FO sights, 7rds, Scandi.
Good package for hiking, drawing the 6" barrel from a hip holster is a long draw, recoil was 'noticeable' with 180gr hardcast 357.
I determined the ergonomics of the revolver were less than optimum and I can shoot my Sig 365
X better and with BB 147gr hardcast, I can put 12 on target easier than I could shoot the revolver so it went down the road for considerably more $ than I paid.
I still have a 686-3 and a SW 14 Target Masterpiece that has deeper bluing than I've seen on any other production firearm.

While inferior for use in the woods, pistols are cheaper and easier to learn to use well. You kind of have to be an adult to make the better choice.

Not sure why you're hung up on .357, tho. Whenever the question is handgun, the answer is always .44.
Only cause the .357 can be found in 7-8 round capacity and it seems that's a big argument against revolvers for some folks. I happen to like shooting .44 mag quite a bit.

The odds of 5 or 6 shots not being enough to scare off anything in the back country (or house) are so small it’s a silly argument right up there with 10 round magazines for big game hunting. I leave semi autos at home because they aren’t very accurate. 99.99% of the time the most likely use for a back country handgun is blasting a small rock, rock chuck, coyote or other such use that actually benefits from good accuracy. Oddly enough one of the most accurate revolvers I’ve come across has been a wonderful little sp101. We shoot it and just laugh at the ridiculously small groups, but man does it help to have sharp young eyes with that super short barrel, and shooting gloves for the recoil of full power loads.

Marketing dollars have convinced a couple generations that semi autos are the only choice, so if someone is getting a handgun as a gift it’s going to be a revolver of some kind. They can buy their own pistol made from recycled car dashboards and tampon applicators.

Plastic gun go brrrr. It's better cuz it's faster...

Huge fan of BFR’s. Currently own a 500 JRH, 475 Linebaugh, and a 45-70.
Owned a S&W 329 Scadium for a short period with full power 44 mag loads. Most brutal recoiling handgun I ever shot.

Last year when hunting in the mountains I carried an sig 365xl for bear defense because it was lighter and carried more rounds than my 40 ounce revolver. However, I’m pretty sure I’m going to go back to a revolver. There’s just something about it that makes me feel more comfortable.i really like the simplicity of a revolver. I’m thinking I may just try and find a lighter revolver or a 7 shot.

Do you know how those are with hot 44 Special loads? I've wondered how they'd be with a 240 at 1,100 or so, which is honestly just fine as a "bear protection load", IMO. Had a scandium 357 for awhile, but gifted to a GF. Is okay with her with 38 Special loads.
I've bounced that idea around in my head quite a bit.

The big advantage of revolvers for me is that I enjoy shooting them a lot more than semi-autos, so I shoot them more. I inherited a 4" barrel S&W 66 that is a joy to shoot. I doubt it's a better choice for anything than a semi-auto except for the fact that I've become more proficient with shooting and reloading than I am with any other handgun.

The 66 rides in a HPG kit bag whenever I feel the need to carry in the woods. I have an LCR that is similarly fun and gets carried quite a bit more often. Honestly, I don't see myself buying any handgun in the future except for revolvers.

When I turned 50 I added a few wheel guns to my collection. My preferred cartridge is 44 special. In rugers it can be loaded to almost 44 mag speeds if needed or cream puff sass loads. They are also smaller due to shorter cylinders.

I prefer shooting my wheel guns at the range as I don’t have to go looking for brass. For cc there are lots of cheap plastic options that work and hold more rounds.

If I need a big thump the 445 supermag gets the job done. My first revolver, paid a whopping 650 way back when.
