So I'm in the market for a new 9mm, something that is semi compact to full frame with an optic cut and threaded barrel for compensation/ suppression. I want to keep barrel length less than 5" without muzzle device in case I want to conceal carry. This gun will ultimately be carried by my wife.

I own a few Glocks but am no means a loyalist, so I'm looking for recommendations of what everyone else likes and why. Pistol budget is $1k. Yes, I've read all 36 pages of this 9mm post. Unfortunately, I don't have a range that does rentals close to me so I can't go demo options.

Currently the following are on my immediate radar in no particular order...please vote in the poll.
Glock G19X
Springfield XDM and Hellcat
Sig P365
FN 509
H&K VP9AIK
S&W MP2.0m

My views as someone who shots pistols daily.
  • Not on your list but the Walther PDP Pro Compact SD is the "easy button" here. Best striker fired trigger, unmatched ergonomics, grip, and build quality for the price point, durability on par with the best. It is the most "shootable" gun on your list, hands down. If you wife will be carrying it, consider the PDP F-Series Pro.
  • M&P 2.0 is a solid option. It might be a little bit "flatter" than my PDP but I'm not quite as fast with it, as it doesn't return to zero quite as naturally, nor is the trigger quite as good. Solid pistol but not on par with PDPs of same price point.
  • The FN 509 is a joke of a gun. They are outdated, over priced, and don't exhibit a single attribute I would consider above average. AVOID
  • The Glock 19x is a soft shooter, but it's a hard gun to love after spending time with the M&P 2.0 and Walther PDP, both of which exhibit more features, shootability, and value.
  • The Sig P365 are great if you are in to that size of pistol. They are highly modular and upgradeable. You can add a safety, change the grip module, add comps, etc.. If I didn't hate Sig Sauer so much, I might a couple more of these.
  • I'd add the CZs to your list. The P-10s are the BEST value in striker fired pistols, and they now offer a threaded barrel version for what you want. If you want a DA/SA design, they also offer the P-09 Nocturne in a threaded version.

S&W Shield Plus. Optic ready and you can get them with a threaded barrel.

I have owned and shot many handguns in the last 50 years. Of all those guns I really like the Shield Plus.

I have an M&P and do recommend it, but I hated the stock trigger. I put an Apex trigger in it and now I absolutely love it. The grip texture is quite rough, which I prefer, but I know other's don't like that as much, so I'd at least try to hold one in the store if I were you.

The 365's are nice pistols, but I don't think they sell a slide and frame combination that I'd actually want to buy. My friend has one that I like, but he has gone through at least 4 different slide and frame combinations. I'm not sure which components he's settled on at the moment. If I felt the need for a thinner pistol, the 365 is what I would go with. I think these also won't accept some of the bigger optics without adapter plates, so that is something to consider if you have a specific optic you like.

I do really like Glocks as well, but don't see a need for a 19x over a standard 19. If you look around you can probably find a police trade-in 19 much cheaper than some of the other options (I've never paid more than $350 for a Glock), and then get the slide cut for whatever optic you choose (direct milled slides are superior to the sub plates most factory cut guns come with)

What’s your sighting plan for the wife?
Irons only?
Red dot?
Does the red dot have to fit into your budget?

Lots of great replies, thank you everyone!
My vote was for a 365, but I’d reconsider the threaded barrel if it’s really going to be carried. There are better pistol platforms if you want to shoot suppressed.
Why no thread for carrying?

Red dot. Budget of 1k is pistol only.

I’ve personally used the following:
Sig 365xl with a Wilson combat grip module.
Glock 19, 17, 41, 45, 49, 34.
CZp10c.

All were reliable and would be an easy recommendation.

I originally got the sig for my wife. But then after using it in a course, she decided she liked the G19 more. I enjoyed the sig with the Wilson grip module, but moved on from it since I liked other guns more.

I’m much more in the single action only camp these days.

I see that Springfield will be releasing the 4.25” Prodigy with the aimpoint COA soon. What would your wife think about that as an option? As a combo, it will probably be right at or jus above your combined budget.

I'd take your wife to the gun store and see which one fits her hand the best. I pocket carry a Hellcat, but that can be snappy for some. I want to get a Glock 43X MOS, but a G48 MOS would be fine also. A S&W Shield Plus would work also. I got a couple of Glock LEO Armorers courses under my belt so I'd opt for the G43X MOS. Especially since they came out with factory 15 round mags now.

Anyone shooting an HK VP9?

I don't know anything about pistols but acquired one of these recently. I only shot it a few times, but seem to like it more than my Glock 19.

I voted 365 but I really meant the FUSE, I was glock 19 guy for 15 years, then I got a fuse, and now two weeks ago my wife got an Echelon, and that is TRULY an upgraded glock 19. 2026 everything is pretty darn good, buy the one that feels the best in your hand
