I still have a dozen merthiolate vials in my first aid kit. I'm pretty sure they are about 60 years old, and I'm also certain they still sting like a mother.
That said, betadine being scrubbed into your hand by a nurse who is also mining for glass shards with an evil pair of tweezers is worse. It's like they don't even care that it hurts. It's just a game of find the shiny objects to them.
But NOTHING stings worse than getting the refund check from fish and game for a tag you were certain of drawing with your points. That one can only be soothed with an appropriate adult beverage, or possibly ice cream.
