True story, I caved and read through half of it. I still feel like I need a cliff notes version.
I don't know if it's something that cliff notes could really convey....but either way, it should be a one time only access thread. No one should read thru this drivel (MINE INCLUDED) more than once. Look!! We're on page 13!! 🤕

The golf community has a group of similar minded folks to some on this thread. They don’t like the golf version of a “poser”. These are the folks with the giant golf bags, who wear all the latest logoed golf clothes, etc,. I was working at a golf course and there was a woman on the practice green. One of our customers looked at her and said something to the effect of, “The only thing worse than a poser is a woman poser.” He was pretty embarrassed when I told him the woman he was referring to was in the LPGA Hall of Fame. Just be careful making assumptions.

I haven’t read this whole thread but from what I’m seeing it’s the Gear Queers that are ruining it here?

Here you go, I’ll try to do these cliff notes justice, it’s the off season and someone needs to bitch about nothing and I’m done.

Almost reached the end of the Internet during this stay at home order and I found this gem!

A lot of assumptions are made about me by different groups. I don’t care. I will wear Kuiu in a goose pit. Not because I’m a fan boy, but because I spent a lot of money on that hat and I’m going to wear it every chance I get.

I have been hunting and fishing with the same buddy since cub scouts and second grade. That’s about 36 years of mistakes and misery, with a couple of epic moments.

We were sleeping out a deluge last month on an AZ javelina hunt, and his 20 year old tent decided to no longer be water resistant. As puddles formed in our sleeping pads, sleeping bags, and everything else, he looked over and said “these synthetic bags really are warm when wet!”

We spent the better part of 3 decades getting by with sub par gear. We used mostly military surplus, hand me downs, and borrowed gear. While sitting out a snow storm in the brooks range a couple of falls ago, Stoking the fire in my titanium stove in my 8 man tipi, wearing merino and synthetics, we both agreed that it’s possible with half assed gear, nice gear sure makes things more comfortable.

My point is, it’s easy to make assumptions when you lump people into groups. Carlos Hathcock used to call NVA soldiers “Hotdogs and Hamburgers” to dehumanize them. Read a book called “On Killing” by Grossman.

Same. I'll share a short, recent story.

The beginning of this year I made my first Kuiu purchase. Guide jacket, pant, and a small handful of other pieces. Mind you, this is not just my first Kuiu purchase but my first expensive, performance clothing purchase. As a part of learning how the clothing will perform I figured it would be a good idea to take it on a recent ski trip to Tahoe. I used the jacket, gloves and base layer pieces - not the pant. No doubt I looked like a fool, a poseur. I don't care. I have some beginning understanding of how the clothing will perform when it comes time to hunt. I also wore new Crispi Hunter GTX when not skiing. Same purpose, to learn.

What's more is I don't care how anybody else spends their money and how they use their purchases.

Being one of the first to sign up on this forum, I agree the complexion has changed. There are still lots of guys on the forum that are great and I am all for new members trying to learn. We all have been there. What is missing is the hardcore folks that started the board in the first place. They have all moved on to more success etc. and it has left a hole. The site is so gear centered and not as much centered on discussing hunts and strategies etc. I am one of the biggest gear junkies there is, but I would much rather read about guys hunt experiences and strategies than read about gear. Gear is personal and either works for you or doesn't, but you don't really know till you go.

Well said.

Make sure you visit our homepage. I try to keep a few hunt articles on there. Here’s some recents.

And there’s more if you look for them.

Thanks

it’s all about perspective. You just need to stop hanging around dudes with big Johnson’s bratwursts and start hanging around dudes with little smokies. Then your 4-5 inches will look giant and you will feel good again....

Or, just stop looking over when at the group urinal (cuz trust me, the guys with the brats between their thighs ain’t looking, they don’t have to). Take your pick

I like new gear myself, but not bleeding edge stuff. It needs to be proven, needs to be useful, and reliable. I remember elk hunting in early 90s and was called inspector gadget, in jest, for carrying a GPS and rangefinder for bowhunting. I was told by veteran hunters and guides that the rangefinder was useless for bowhunting. Things have totally changed now.
