Any of the bullets discussed on here will kill and elk dead as dead about the same. If I were you I'd see how those ABLR shoot and if they do I'd run em. Unless you just want to buy and shoot a bunch of bullets...

I hadn't heard of these so I went and looked them up. It looks like they aren't recommended for hunting, is that what you use them for?

Search this forum and 24hourcampfire and see all the people killing with scenars. They are absolute bone crushers...Guys I trust like Pat Sinclair have killed more game with them than most will in a lifetime. I believe Pat killed a big interior grizz with a 139 out of a 260. My friends and family have killed numerous deer, antelope, bear, and elk with them the last few years and they flat work. Have yet to recover a single bullet - as everyone has passed thru.

Killed a 80" Idaho antelope with a chest on shot at 147 yards with a 139 out of the PRC and it exited out its tailbone.

Think of it as a harder berger.

When I talked to @Unknown Munitions he recommended the 175gr Berger for my 7mm Rem Mag because my barrel twist of 1:9".

I am thinking about trying the 166gr Hornady A-tip.

I think I am going to order in some Bergers and load them up too. My Ridgeline shot the regular accubonds and the VLDs very well.

My rifle:
27" 7mmWSM, 1/9 twist
143gr Hammer Hunter @3350fps
Alpha WSM magazine
Re22
Can get more details if helpful

I got my first elk this past fall, using the above combo. Double lung broadside at 100yds, broken ribs on entry and exit and massive blood loss through the exit. Big cow elk, she stumbled down hill a bit, rotated 180* and stood there losing blood. I put a second round through the exit (d'oh) and she tumbled. Round 2 was unnecessary but cheap insurance.

I like the HH because, while I was practicing for a shot in the 400+ yard range, a chip shot was what I ended up with. I am afraid another bullet type might have not fared too well at such close range, especially if I had stuck it in the shoulder.

Load dev was silly easy with the Hammers.

What charge weights are you using? Also what are your thoughts/feedback on temp sensitivity of RL22? I’m trying to go with more temp stable powders in my load development. I can be working on loads anywhere from 25* to 85*.

Also 3350 is hauling ass, you have some throat work done? That would be an awesome package, I bet it would throw the heavier HH pills at good velocities too.

I had the rifle built years ago, and just remember telling the Smith I wanted 162gr AMax to go really fast. It shot Copper Creek loaded 162gr AMax at 3090-3100.

RE22: I did my load work up at 95*. I got around to loading for it about this time last year, and no Re26 or was Re23 to be found, while I had the 22 on hand.

My load ended up at 66gr Re22, Winchester LRM primers and Wimchester new brass. COAL: 2.907" for .005 or .007" jump. Looking at my data, I did final load verification at 43* and 3290 fps, whereas the same load was 3355 at 95*. 66gr RE22. I stopped at 66.8 with slight ejector marks and slight stiff bolt lift on that 95* day. Plesse start lower, every rifle is different and be safe.

Best regards,

Jonathan

Thank you,

I might try to snag some RL 23 or 26 if I can find it. I also wanted to try Retumbo or H1000 depending on which one I found first.

The ELDx has killed everything I’ve shot with em just fine but wouldn’t be my first choice for dedicated elk load. They will get splashy at wsm velocities. The elk and wolf below are both entry wounds from last year with 175 eldx at low 2800s MV.

I’d probably go 175 Berger, 180 Berger, 160 accubond, or mono.

How do they like to be seated? Do they like to be out to the lands? I am working on loads for my 280ai and my mag length is short so I need something that likes some jump.

Son killed a truckload of deer, bears and elk with a 180 scenar doing around 2870 fps. I actually had them shoot well in a 9 twist. Never used a 150, but imagine it would do fine as well. Not sure about seating in a 7 wsm short action though.

Here are a few scenar kills from that last few years - 139's 155's, and 220's....

We have also killed a couple cow elk and a raghorn bull - Ill see if I can track those pics down as well...

Good work, I may have to mess with these at some point.
