Anyone else listen to the latest Meateater podcast ep. 799? There’s multiple anti-gun ads. The ad is for www.everytown.org. Website calls for background checks, prohibition of assault weapons, and repel gun industry immunity. Not a good luck at all for Meateater but not like they haven’t been involved in many issues like this before..

I am not an expert, but I believe that podcast ads are different between listeners. Often times, podcasts sell time to an ad agency, and the agency fills the time based on the algorithm of an individual listener.

I am a Meat Eater hater, but it may not be actually endorsed by them.

Yeah, that.

Was it an ad read by one of the Meateater people or an inserted ad by the podcast host platform? 99.9% chance it's the latter.

Seems crazy to not have any control or say-so in what ads are run in your space.
I doubt Alex Jones has Everytown ads lol

It’s an inserted ad. So there is no way of screening which ads your podcast host will run?

Its entirely platform dependent. Some platforms, you do have control of types of ad content, or, rather, you can exclude certain types of ad content, other platforms you have less, little or no control. Some types of ads are targeting the behavior profile of the individual listener, other are targeting any listener of the particular podcast and some may even be non specific. depending on the platform.

Most podcasts are using a singular, 3rd party platform to publish to a variety of listening platforms so there is control loss vs. individually managing every single platform. Could even be that EveryTown is targeting firearm related content for their messaging. Could also be that The Meateater brand has not attempted to exclude such content because it never occurred to anyone that antigun related ads would run. Or, maybe that's not even a category of ad one can specifically exclude the same way you might exclude liquor or gambling ads.

They arent chosing those adds. Adds different based on the platform hosting the podcast.

It'll be mostly controlled by one's algorithm. Unless the ad is part of the show and the hosts are doing it.

So the question begs another question. OP, why is your algorithm aimed at being a dirty Ole red coat?

Meateater is an iHeart podcast, so that anti-gun platform can buy their own ads and run them on the meat eater feed outside of what ME actually uploads. If it's not Steve reading the ads, it's not a Meateater sponsorship. They've had issues with this in the past so to avoid any confusion, Steve does all the official reads and anything else is inserted by the podcast distributor

This isn't true, podcast distribution is too fragmented to be driven by an algo a la YouTube or social media. Podcast ads are largely targeted by demographic and geographic data, especially if the podcast you're listening to is part of a network like iHeart (Meateater). This is why you'll get regionally targeted political ads for a national podcast based out of Montana.
