Looks like some pork slaughterhouses are closing down and two Kansas beef slaughterhouses are shutting down for a few weeks. One killed 50+ cattle today because no one showed up for work.

"JBS in Greeley is shutting there doors for 2weeks and National in Garden city killed 56 head today because nobody showed up for work."

I heard Tyson was shutting down a plant in Philadelphia.
I wonder how much is due to Covid running through the plants, vs the meat not being able to go to a processing plant which packages for the retail store. So much of our food is packaged for restaurants, schools, etc... Homebuyers aren't prepared to purchase boxes of meat in large qty + they don't look pretty... :-\

Most retail stores buy boxed meat from the packing houses then they repackage at the store.

Sure glad I've got a freezer full of miscellaneous critters. My guess is the readers of this forum are in a much better position to weather a meat shortage in the stores than your average Joe!

A couple nights ago we had both beef and venison in our stew for dinner. Mmmmm. What’s a meat shortage?

Setting aside the “I am a hunter with a freezer full of meat” thing for a moment, When I left the NY suburbs a month ago, the grocery meat cases were cleaned out. I mean nothing. Bare as the toilet paper aisle. Not sure that is still the case but my hunting buddies have ripped through their game meat in the last few weeks. We are basing out of rural PA and our big box groceries are hit or miss for meat. Local grocer is also a butcher so they have stock but their prices are creeping up and they get cleaned out every now and then by someone, typically from the nearby city, doing a rural meat / supplies run. That rural store foraging has become a thing, where wealthier people are cruising through small towns and clearing out the small groceries and dollar stores.

There is definitely a demand side issue that is causing hoarding. If they can’t reopen these plants in a timely fashion, that is about to converge with a supply side problem and create a legit shortage. It is going to hit less well off people first and the most so it has me concerned for them. Say what your want about your personal stock of game meat, but We all know there isn’t enough wild game for everyone to go get their own so I hope this issue resolved itself soon.

AGFC normally does a free fishing weekend up in june where anyone without a fishing license can go fishing. A couple weeks ago they did a free fishing week so people could go catch some fish to eat without needing a license. Not sure if they extended that or not but thought it was a nice gesture by the Commission.

I had not heard about any of the meat plant closings.

Our local wholesaler has been hit or miss and has been restocking with different products. I thought it was strange but maybe they are just putting out whatever they are able to find.

A freezer full of venison and turkey feels good. The 6 Black Angus at my parents place seem to be doing pretty well.

I really haven’t worried about this entire virus thing until I hear about this.

JBS in Greeley Colorado is big time. Long term closures of plants like this is worst case scenario. Not only are ranchers/cattlemen going to be in big trouble, the price of meat will skyrocket. It’s things like this, that can bring total disruption to food markets and down the line impacts could be even worse.

I hope this ends soon.

I truly hope this doesn’t get too ugly. I have already began sharing venison/pork with neighbors.
