So our local Sam's got a huge shipment of toilet paper in yesterday. Someone was in there when it opened and put a picture on facebook about 10 am. There were palates double stacked. It was gone by 4pm.

The wife has been after me to get a chest freezer for two years. So I agreed to get a 9 CF cheap one for this hunting season coming up. Well, too late. None available till July except expensive ones.

Looks like folks have all gone prepper.

Now all we need is an EMP attack to top stuff off.

If this all gets straightened out, it should wake people up to just how quickly things can go south. But I highly doubt it.

I've always teased my wife about her bulk buying things on sale with coupons. She's getting the last laugh now.
Having three freezers full of Deer and Elk isn't a bad thing right now.

As of today 12 major plants are down, approximately 30% of US beef production. By the end of the month we will be short but it is temporary, so no need to panic.

There’s lots of animals just not slaughter plants to take them. Now is a good time for bad/non-hunters to get to know their local butcher.

Looks like some pork slaughterhouses are closing down and two Kansas beef slaughterhouses are shutting down for a few weeks. One killed 50+ cattle today because no one showed up for work.

"JBS in Greeley is shutting there doors for 2weeks and National in Garden city killed 56 head today because nobody showed up for work."

I haven't had a meat storage since i took up hunting. #hallelujah

Oh there will be panic. A months worth of meat is going to be gone in 3 days.
Except there isn't a months worth of meat. Before the first wave of panic buying, there was just over a weeks worth in frozen storage reserves. We are about a week into reduced production. My best guess is that demand will out pace supply + reserves in 1-1.5 weeks. When the second round of panic buying sets in stores will be picked clean.

Everyone is talking about chest freezers and I'm over here looking out the dining room window watching my meat grazing in the backyard.

Yep, just go out and lop off what you need.....as you need it.......right?

I was at the commissary this morning and they still had cooler shelves full of bacon.........so I bought a bunch more at $2.94/lb. From what we keep hearing, the supply will be gone or the prices will sky rocket, or both.......so might as well stock up.

They are out in my front field too. We still have cold pack and some steaks in the refrigerator freezer but it is getting thin. I should have bought a freezer long ago but had higher priorities. If you can butcher your own, it should not be a big deal to have meat. You can always cold pack, make jerky, smoke it, etc. If you live in the city, it may be a different story.

Ranchers are going to be the ones to absorb the losses. 50% of meat sales go to restaurants etc vs retail. Packers pass their losses down the chain vs to the consumers. Market prices for beef, pork, lamb have tanked and will most likely take some time to rebound rather than snap back once the economy starts to reopen. The impacts will be far reaching.

Feeders are going to take it as well. They have to keep feeding everything until they can start moving them again.

I just got back from the store here - definitely already well picked-over and lacking a lot of stuff thta has been pretty consistently available up to this point. Only time will tell what's there - or more specifically, not there - by the next time I need to go. It is what it is though and we'll make do either way.

Here in Nebraska my family has some beef ready to kill, but the packing plants and butchers are experiencing longer than average wait times to kill. Major packing plants shutting down is only gonna become more common as we keep going through this COVID-19 situation.

So far so good here. Mixture of elk steaks and ground. Mixture of beef, chicken and BACON. Wife said she got what she needed two days ago. We’re good for a long while in the meat dept.
