"JBS in Greeley is shutting there doors for 2weeks and National in Garden city killed 56 head today because nobody showed up for work."

That doesn't make any sense. Nobody showed up for work, so they killed 56 head when no one was there to cut them up??????? I guess they can just let them hang in the locker and age until they get cut. But if nobody showed up for work, who killed the 56 head?????

Setting aside the “I am a hunter with a freezer full of meat” thing for a moment, When I left the NY suburbs a month ago, the grocery meat cases were cleaned out. I mean nothing. Bare as the toilet paper aisle. Not sure that is still the case but my hunting buddies have ripped through their game meat in the last few weeks. We are basing out of rural PA and our big box groceries are hit or miss for meat. Local grocer is also a butcher so they have stock but their prices are creeping up and they get cleaned out every now and then by someone, typically from the nearby city, doing a rural meat / supplies run. That rural store foraging has become a thing, where wealthier people are cruising through small towns and clearing out the small groceries and dollar stores.

There is definitely a demand side issue that is causing hoarding. If they can’t reopen these plants in a timely fashion, that is about to converge with a supply side problem and create a legit shortage. It is going to hit less well off people first and the most so it has me concerned for them. Say what your want about your personal stock of game meat, but We all know there isn’t enough wild game for everyone to go get their own so I hope this issue resolved itself soon.
good points and you are correct. I am fine with a pending meat shortage, we have plenty, but it's not because i'm smart and plan ahead for things like this, i'm lucky that what I like to do lines up how it does in this scenario.

myself aside, what about the rest of the country? world? a meat shortage could be bad news for a lot of people, and yes, the less well off will be hit the hardest.... that's not good.

through this whole thing, I have not worried about my family, but all of the families who are and will be getting effected the worse, by the virus itself or the side effects of it.

I am temporarily out of work right now, and my wife's business is still kind of running, but very low scale compared to normal, it's an inconvenience for us, but i'm well aware of the real burden this creates for a lot of families around the world.

with this whole pandemic there is a lot of selfish thinking going on, it comes in a lot of forms, but we really should all look around us, even if we're doing good right now, be aware that others aren't.

at the VERY least, it seems like it would humble people and give them real appreciation for what they do have, but on a large scale, it doesn't seem to.

it's frustrating to think nothing much good will come out of this, when life goes back to normal, there will be very little humbling or added appreciation, people will still base life off of their current little bubble.

Maybe a good time to evaluate the necessity of the copious quantities of meat the average American consumes. It is unquestionably not necessary to eat any meat at all, let alone 6-8 servings a day.

Coming from a meat lover, though I had already begun reducing my intake starting this year.

Seems the working man amd The farmers generally take the brunt of thing's. Same here shortage of dairy products and limits in stores yet the farmer price is so low they cant even break even.their dumping loads of milk in the field
I can tell you beef prices from a ranchers standpoint haven't done sh*t. They've declined but yet there's a shortage of beef on the shelves. Tell me how that makes sense. Frustrating to say the least.

That's my thought, doesn't make sense. Not like it goes bad standing just takes food and water. Only thing would be if it's streamlined to the point they can't stick them back on rail cars or trailers and they had more coming in with no employees to cut.

Local Cargill poultry facility right next to one of my farms several employees have now tested positive. It's an ai facility that they lay eggs for broilers. Probably going to mess up their supply chain here locally pretty good.

This could get ugly pretty quick in the urban areas where people just expect the grocery to have everything they want whenever they want it. I talked to someone in S FL and they said that it's getting hit or miss in the local grocery stores, might have something one day but not the next. Locally here in WA the Costco had no pork bellies last week and no chicken a week or so before.
Watching the futures prices on cattle and hogs drop significantly makes no sense when there is increased demand. Rough times for the farmers/ranchers.

Doesn't matter what the demand is when the distribution isn't there. No distribution, fats standing around in the feedlots getting overfinished, no room to bring in new cattle.

Demand doesn't matter when there is no supply. It will be good on a smaller scale for local butchers but not on a large scale.

I wonder if the animal rights folks will celebrate not being able to buy a pork chop or chicken breast at their favorite store. They's about to get some learnin's sounds like to me. Sucks for the ranchers is the only thing keeping me from laughing my ass off at no meat at the store.

i read that pork producers are hurting becasue most of their product is sent out to Asia. with their consumption drastically cut, the obvious happened.

i buy my beef from a small local rancher. she is doing fine. my pork? she is about 60lbs right now.

so isnt it a meat surplus?

New numbers out, Smithfield plant had 88 more positive workers today. Brings the total to nearly 400 from that facility.

I think demand is there, processing isn't.I think near 50 % of Covid cases in SD are from processing plants that therefore had to shut down. The main one is Smithfield,a huge one.AND,of all their plants in the US,this one was their last one to close. Not good.
IMO,understandably Pres Trump and his staff realize production(business) has to start reopening.Soon!
Of course the liberal jackwads will criticize him either way. Both ways.A winning deal for those losers.

Food shortages can be a problem for everyone, even those who have stored a lot of food. Now I am seeing the start of politicizing this big time......cuomo vs Trump. Cuomo has a large % of the USA cases and he is in no position to criticize anyone...

This is going to get much worse in the coming months. Lotsa things to ? here.......WHO seems biased to china and against Taiwan....purposeful release of this for end goals?.....the economic devastation could be as unprecedented as the 'response' due to the nature of the response........you start flipping a domino over and when domino's are falling everywhere it is sensible to ask if the first flip was purposeful.

There are no water or feed setups at most facilities, it's pretty much off the truck and head for the knocker! And if a critter gets out of escapes the truck at unload, that's a wasted animal as they can't accept it so it gets put down and hauled off by the rendering truck

Another issue that is already a reality is farmers who grow for large restaurant supply chains are having trouble finding buyers as restaurant sales are way down even though they are still open.

It will be apparent when things open back up and there are shortages to go around for awhile.

It sure seems like the real impact of this thing is going to be a bit harsher and last a little longer than the optimists are projecting.

You haven't seen a food shortage yet. Now that this talk about meat shortages is getting around and the fed checks are showing up in folks bank accounts. By this weekend things are gonna be getting crazy for a few days until the money runs out. Idiot's will have a freezer full of meat and TP to last a year but not a bean, rice, or any other common sense staple in the house. Oh ya and a brand new giant flat screen tv.

Middleman bottleneck.

Looking at international news, a similar bottleneck started happening in India two weeks ago.
