License to Shed Hunt

Given the rise of seasons for shed hunting, I have an idea. I'd like to see Fish and Game dpts start requiring a license to shed hunt with the proceeds of the license revenue targetted to enforcement budgets and habitat, either purchasing property or habitat improvement projects on huntable lands. Why? We (I shed hunt) undoubtedly have a negative impact on the resource, so I think we should pay something for that, say, the cost of a Resident license in whatever state you happen to be. I think this also strengthens the conversation for licensing "non consumptive use", which also have negative impacts. Thoughts? Have any states considered this?

I think UT already has that in place..I’m sure other states do too. Wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen more and more.

We need a shed lic here in Washington. Shed hunting disturbs so many weak animals it needs to be tightly monitored enforced.

We have areas that open May 1 and there is always piles of antlers from guys stacking before the opener. This is the type of crap that needs to go away. Get caught lose your shed license and hunting privilege for a bit. Our game animals need to be protected.

Don’t have to pay for the license just take a quiz and pass it.

I am all for seasons but to make someone buy a license seems a little over the top. I have zero problem paying for my combo license and tags but to add another tax/fee, come on.

I don’t have a answer to the problem, and it is a problem. Pine nut picking in UT is another problem that needs to be addressed. This year on my cow hunt the mountains were covered in pickers. Not family’s, groups that were dropped off from commercial operations.

If I want to cut a Christmas tree in UT , I need to buy a permit and I am limited to how many I can cut.

Maybe the same needs to be done for pine nut picking and shed collecting?

Just for clarification, my understanding of shed hunting is walking around looking for antlers that have naturally fallen off off animals.

Not necessarily, anyone can do that. It's only when you've bent over and picked up that shed that it's now a problem for some reason, and needs a license.

Where are you from? It's a huge problem facing almost all the wintering grounds across the west.
Some are trying to be Instafamous and tons of others want that $16+ dollar a pound payoff.

If people are making money off of sheds, then yes is needs to licensed. That is natural resource being taken off the land for personal profit. States regulate the natural resource within a state (I know that is an oversimplification and even stretch in this scenario.)

It also is a burden on the land and animals, which our licences and tag fees go to support.

Why would we allow a natural resource be taken off the same land as our animals for free?

Gonna have to agree with this. I realize there are idiots out there who take advantage of everything but like I need another license and regulations to do another outdoor activity.

Why couldn't your hunting license you already purchased to hunt cover sheds as well? It could just require those that want to shed hunt, buy a hunting license. It's not an additional license for those already with a hunting license. It's a license for those who don't currently contribute, but reap benefits.

That doesn't address any of the problems with the current state of "shed" hunting.

People want sheds for whatever the reason.

People have "GOT" to go early to beat everyone and pick up the good ones. Just going to have a quick "look" around. No big deal animals are just using this area to try and survive until spring, but it's so convenient and easy to "look" so many animals wintering in this small area.

Then when no sheds are found--well shit if we just keep coming back and keep stomping around this area surely we'll find a good one.

Then holy hell I found one but I just have to match it up and it doesn't really hurt to stomp around a little bit more.

Other guys come later and only find boot prints---Well shit I'll just have to go earlier next year and beat the other guys here.

Meanwhile animals are stressing out with all the coming and going of the small horde of antler lovers.

I'll buy the stamp immediately if it means I'm not prohibited from picking antlers up while hiking with my dog in the spring.
