I'll preface this by saying in life it's a lot better to be an optometrist then a negative Nancy.

That said it's hard to look past the trees to see the forest in this instance.

Dealing with leftist on a day in day out basis is not fun. Spent the first third of last year in California. Rather drag my nuts across sandpaper for a living in flint hills Nebraska then deal with those west coast lefty whack jobs indefinitely.

and it is a bit of a folly to go somewhere on holiday and axtrapolate that dataset into a long term course of action.

That said Is there a reason you picked Portland over say a further south locale?

A place like veneta in Oregon is less then 45 minutes to the beach and just about that to mountains east.

Homes in the lower 300s

Eugene is a bit too big for my tastes but at 180k it isn't giant and should be opportunities for employment in your field.

If your job is in Portland then I'd just stay on that side of the border. There's elk hunting opportunities, the coast is cool and you can rip some lips on the fish.

Politics on the westside of both states are ridiculous as noted by others. All in all there are worse cities to deal with than Portland. It's not that big, the food and beer are good and you've got decent access to all sorts of recreation.

You guys think traffic is bad in Portland try Seattle 😩 But I make good money and there is a lot of work. There is plus and minus to anything it's all a state of mind, I listen to podcast in traffic gets me threw. There is some awesome blacktail hunting in Oregon and elk to! I'm from the Midwest and had a chance to go back but no way would I. Once you use all the public land out here and fish the salt water it's really a awesome place to be😜Good luck man you won't regret it.

I moved away from Washington and every time I go home to visit or read posts on huntwa I wonder why sportsmen live there or states like it.

With the cost of housing in or around the cities, length of commutes, and whack jobs I would have to make $1mil a year to move back.

Oregon has great OTC mule deer and elk opportunity for archery. Bit of a hidden gem among the western states if you ask me.

The govt has shipped me all over the place, they all have positives and negatives. I’ve had fun in all the places. It is what you make it. So many careers are transitioning to the bigger cities due to bigger skill pool to draw from, more sales opportunities, etc. If your career leads you there, make the best of it, take advantage of all the hunting and fishing you can and cuss the traffic on Monday’s. Traffic is bad, but I survived and grew up in a town of 76 people.

I will say my favorite restaurant is in Portland, Andinas Peruvian food, if I ever drive through Oregon I’ll stop again.

I'd choose Portland over KY any day. Portland is a predominant white liberal town that prides itself on being weird. there is more tatted up knappy haired millennial's than I care for. It takes some strategy to deal with the traffic and housing situation but if you can figure it out you are a hop skip and a jump from quality hunting in eastern OR. The Bow is your ticket to quality animals. Like said above the rest of the Western States are just hours away. Do you mind rain?

I've been in the Portland area for 20 years now. Grew up in Montana and have traveled and worked in 38 different states. I would pick Portland over anything East of the Mississippi. I work near downtown but have only been downtown maybe 10 times in 20 years. I rarely run into the people you see on the news. They tend to be downtown. My commute is 20-25 minutes starting at 6:00 and leaving at 2:30. Where you live is what you make of it. You get to archery hunt elk and blacktail every year, and there are allot of fishing opportunities. Still can't wait to retire back to Montana!

Nope, pretty accustomed to it. My town received 57" inches of rain last year, over 2 feet more than Portland. Typically average 6" inches more than Portland yearly. Don't get me started about the summer humidity as well lol.

Went to culinary school in Portland back in early 2000s. From TN originally, don't even compare the rain in the south to western Oregon. Still sunny days in the winter in the south, forget that thought in Portland from late Oct til April time frame. No way in hell I'd move back to Portland now. But, you already know how to pump your own gas so you're way ahead of most in Portland. I've had friends that have lost their houses and apts in Portland because their landlords broke their contracts to rent them out for more money. Plenty of strip clubs in Pornland, but that place is a shell of the city I remember. Good luck. Summers are nice, but the cost of living is gonna be higher than anywhere in KY.

I don't live in TN, I'm in KY minutes from Cincinnati. Few more sunnier days a year but more rain here, not sure who wins that. You're right about cost of living though... Not many states cheaper than here.
