Informal Cold Bore Challenge

I’ll refrain from turning this post into a love letter to this new 6mm ARC. Took my cold bore shot with it this afternoon at a target that I’ve struggled on when shooting my 223. It’s a 4° uphill angle which doesn’t seem bad until I try to settle in on it. It’s a 10” target at 730 yards. Today’s wind was 1mph. Temp was 19° and I center punched it. The Horndy 103 ‘ELD-X ammo has been very consistent from this box. I still have a lot to practice but I think this rifle is going to be the one I tell the grandkids about.

Just found this thread today, otherwise I would have been all in. Just starting reloading so I've been shooting a bit the last couple weeks.

Gonna out out tomorrow so I'll be sure and film it so I can participate! @YaakRiver standby for a pm, i think we might be in the same neighborhood.

absolutely! This isn't about a specific cartridge, bullet, rifle etc. . . It's just about being motivated to get out and get better.

That's a rad muzzleloader! With the exception of being able to use percussion caps, we're restricted to primitive muzzleloaders for hunting here in Montana. I will spare the Rockslide crowd the pain of watching me shoot minute-of-watermelon groups at 100 yards with it.

Today was a good day for improvement. Bad day for first round hits lol.

Rifle - ruger m77 mkii .243 win 20" barrel
Optic - leupold vx3 HD 3.5-10 duplex/cds
Ammo - 95 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips 40.5 gr h4350 @ 2954 fps
Trigger - mostly stock, light polish w/ mcarbo spring

Target range is 438 yrds, shooting at a triangle shaped target that's 10" wide at the bottom and tapers up to 4" in the upper third. Prone, cv life harris knockoff bipod, ultralight rear bag.

29ish degrees, can't remember the rest of the environmentals off the top of my head
Wind was mostly calm but varied between 1-4mph from approx 9 o'clock to 11o'clock and possibly more throughout the day.

Held just off the left edge for Wind and missed the cold bore shot. Held center and missed just off the right edge as the wind increased a little. Third shot was a winner, help left edge but on the plate.

Triangles are odd shapes and left lots of room for improvement!

Edit- don't know how to upload videos

All about getting better man!

Seem to have things sorted out with my 223. 2nd lot of frontier 68g bthp was actually almost 100 fps faster than the stuff I was shooting originally. This lot doesn't group as well but groups well enough. Sent one from prone this morning with rear support. This was both a cold bore shot and a chance to check things out at 300. Cold bore shot was a hit on the plate.
Ran the last 9 rounds into a bigger plate with horizontal line to verify velocity and correction I was using. Looks like it's close enough to practice with.
I want to start filming my impacts. I notice everyone seems to be using YouTube. Is that the only way to post the clips or do most of you already have an account so it's the easiest method? I don't have a yt account but I guess I could create one if it's the best way.

Not sure if YouTube is the only way to post a video but it was easy enough. Only took a couple minutes to make a short and im not very tech savvy nor had i ever made a yt video.

Good shooting!

Thank you. I'll give yt a go. For a 40 yr old guy I am really bad with tech. Maybe I can sort it out

The 6 arc is something isn't it? My brother in law asked me about cartridges for his oldest son to start with. I suggested it. I fell in love with it just helping him get the scope mounted and zeroed. If I had not just had a 243 cut and threaded I would be shooting one now. Very pleasant shooting.

Glad you figured it out. I handload/reload but I picked up 2 boxes of Hornady 103 ELD-X loaded ammo for that new 6mm ARC - just so that I'd be able to put a few rounds through it. There was over 100fps of difference between the 2 boxes. I've never seen that much disparity. I really like Hornady and I appreciated that they kept trying to crank out ammo during the shortages - so I'm not criticizing them.

I don't think Rokslide allows videos to be uploaded? I tried but it may have been the wrong size or format? Anyway, if you have a google e-mail account, you can use that account on YouTube and it's easy to upload the short videos.

It is! Accurate. Minimal recoil. Easy to load for. I won't hesitate to use it for any game that we hunt here in Montana (at distances where the velocity ensures proper bullet performance).

Great recommendation to your brother-in-law.
