Hunting Dog Under 20lbs

Hey y’all.

I hunt with my Aussie. I’ve asked her to place, moved 150 yards, and taken game. She wont move until I recall and herds cattle and horses. She is exceptional. She recalls dove (minor crunching) and locates deer.

My only issue is that she can’t fly with me. Most airlines set limits at 20lbs.

Our second dog (black lab) is getting up in age and has bad arthritis, so I’m looking to add a third that is smart, and can learn a bit from our mature pups.

I was looking at Boykins but they seem a little too big ~25+ lbs?). I’ve trained horses and dogs for a living in my younger years so a high drive dog isn’t a problem.

Jagd’s don’t seem like the right answer. I was thinking about cockers or sport dachshunds. If not I’ll give up and go with a mid size pup I can’t fly with.

The goal is to have a lookout in bear country that will heel/stay when asked, and that can fly without a “vest”. I know that’s asking a lot.

Let me know if you have any suggestions. I can’t decide.

My wife’s mini schnauzer is a retrieving machine. She is the perfect girl. Dumb and pretty. I don’t think the lookout part is a good fit but she is under 20#

Please suggest breeders if you can. Jagd was high on the list but I have cats.
With cats, I wouldn't get a jagd.

I've known people with kennels full of horseback field trial pointers struggle with their prey drive.

Female Boykin that's the runt of the litter? Lol

Every dog has its own personality but all of the multiple Jags I’ve been around have been remarkably pleasant. Excellent mix of hunting drive and home front livability. Like anything else, break em in you g around the cats and you should be fine.

A lot of folks in south have moved to English Cockers. I run mine with my pointers. She’s 19 pounds and smart

A Teckel is a dachshund that still has the old hunting bloodline from Germany. I think they do a number of things.

I have a toy sized Aussie. He is on the big side at 22#’s but the majority of the litters finish out between 15-20#’s. I am from Canada so I got him from a breeder in Alberta but I’m sure there are lots of breeders in the US.

Cockers are often under 20lb. I think anyway, some are def bigger than others. A buddy I used to hunt with had several. They’re a pile of fun, very high drive, animated, very smart. Totally different dog than the show/pet cockers. Retrieving wont be a problem. Theres spaniel tests and clubs in a lot of places if you want to see some in action. The resource is ESSFT.com

This dynamic duo is quite the set of unorthodox hunting dogs. Jack Skellington will be 3 on Halloween and he's a 42# border/heeler that minds VERY WELL! Six months later, my wife came home with Walter White, who is now a 2-year old 13.5# Maltese/Poodle because she wanted a lap dog. Well, he's about 10% lap dog and for the rest, he's tapped into his hunting poodle ancestry. Last spring we were just going walking and he went into the brush and came out with a shed! He's completely ate up with pigeons and locks in on anything that flies! He flushed and recovered his first pheasant last December. They go to work with me every day and chase and catch rabbits and ground squirrels regularly. We'll be chasing pheasants this next weekend up here in North Dakota and will be going to SoDak for pheasants, as well. Very little "bird" training. Just obedience training from me. If I rack the bolt on any gun, his eyes are locked in on where that barrel is pointed. His nose is great and they flushed a couple roosters this last weekend. I almost never have them on leashes. I can't imagine his abilities if I was really serious about upland hunting and really focused on making him the best bird dog! Just yesterday I got permission to rid a grain elevator of pigeons and HUNDREDS of rats! We can't wait!
