Hey y’all.

I hunt with my Aussie. I’ve asked her to place, moved 150 yards, and taken game. She wont move until I recall and herds cattle and horses. She is exceptional. She recalls dove (minor crunching) and locates deer.

My only issue is that she can’t fly with me. Most airlines set limits at 20lbs.

Our second dog (black lab) is getting up in age and has bad arthritis, so I’m looking to add a third that is smart, and can learn a bit from our mature pups.

I was looking at Boykins but they seem a little too big ~25+ lbs?). I’ve trained horses and dogs for a living in my younger years so a high drive dog isn’t a problem.

Jagd’s don’t seem like the right answer. I was thinking about cockers or sport dachshunds. If not I’ll give up and go with a mid size pup I can’t fly with.

The goal is to have a lookout in bear country that will heel/stay when asked, and that can fly without a “vest”. I know that’s asking a lot.

Let me know if you have any suggestions. I can’t decide.

My wife’s mini schnauzer is a retrieving machine. She is the perfect girl. Dumb and pretty. I don’t think the lookout part is a good fit but she is under 20#

Please suggest breeders if you can. Jagd was high on the list but I have cats.
With cats, I wouldn't get a jagd.

I've known people with kennels full of horseback field trial pointers struggle with their prey drive.

Female Boykin that's the runt of the litter? Lol

Every dog has its own personality but all of the multiple Jags I’ve been around have been remarkably pleasant. Excellent mix of hunting drive and home front livability. Like anything else, break em in you g around the cats and you should be fine.

A lot of folks in south have moved to English Cockers. I run mine with my pointers. She’s 19 pounds and smart
