Hill Style/ASL Longbows Anyone?

They’re weird bows. They frustrate the hell out of you on the range, but somehow pull through in the field. I don’t get it, but under stress, it performs for me.

I have stated this many times. The longbow has always been my first choice because it just comes together better under stress for me.

Brown glass on mine as well. I’m of the personal opinion that a Hill bow should have plain color glass on the back and belly.

..Or snakeskin . I love these style of longbows but man over the last few years I’m at a point where I just cannot shoot them due to severe elbow pain. I can shoot my recurve all day, even a modern r/d longbow, but my real longbows and my self bows just seem to concentrate right into my sore elbow!
This was always one of my favorites. It’s a John Strunk laminated longbow from the early 90’s. It’s actually a short ASL at only 62” but it made a good tree stand and ground blind longbow. I’ve shot turkeys with it but never got a deer with this one. I also have a Strunk yew and bamboo that’s more of a r/d profile.

An individual told me with an ASL bow that you can grip if firm, not white finger death grip but firm. Your thoughts on this!

Best description that I've ever heard was to hold the bow as if you were holding a small bird. Firm enough that it can't escape but soft enough to not crush it.

Got a rabbit with my SPL Pacific Styk a week or so back. Good fun.


Might take an ASL out in the deer rut here soon if I can get one on the ground early with my recurve.

My friend Steve had started making this bow and he started having shoulder problems before he got it finished. He gave me this bow before retiring and moving out of Alaska. All I had to do is finish the arrow shelf , thin the limb tips and put a finish on the bow . 66" HONEY Locust wood 65#@28 ...... sweet shooting bow , super quiet , smooth and no hand shock . I have yet to take a big game animal with it (lots of grouse) but hopefully this year a bear and/or moose
He also has HH Cheetah that is probably one of the best looking bows that I've ever seen , the juniper in that bow is absolutely perfect!!!! And shoots great !!
I have no problems with Hill style bows , I just palm them good , a firm grip and they shoot great for me .

Great looking bows guys. ASLs are definitely my favorite style of bow to shoot/hunt with.

Heading out today and taking an ASL with me but I'm also taking a rifle. Diesel prices are through the roof and I won't feel so bad taking a three hour round trip drive to check trail cameras if there is a better chance I'll fill my freezer at the same time.
